Melvin Eugene “Mel” Berg, passed away on October 11, 2026, in Littleton, Colorado, at the age of 90. Born on June 30, 1936, in Guymon, Oklahoma, he lived nine decades in a way that was unmistakably his own. He was a husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, entrepreneur, author, songwriter, and country gospel singer. Above all, he wanted to put Jesus Christ first in everything he did and share the Gospel with as many people as he possibly could.
And if he could make you laugh while doing it, all the better.
Mel had a big personality, a wonderful sense of humor, and a love for entertaining. Give him a microphone, and he was in his element. A country gospel singer with a deep, unmistakable voice, Mel could hold a note seemingly forever, and leaving his audience wondering how long he could possibly keep it going. Whether performing for an audience or making his grandchildren laugh, Mel knew how to entertain.
Behind his showmanship was a deep and unwavering Christian faith. Mel believed in putting Jesus Christ first in everything he did and dedicated much of his life to sharing the Gospel through music, writing, and business. He was a showman, but he was never just putting on a show. He believed in what he was singing.
Mel served in the United States Air Force. He later founded Alpha & Omega Distributors, which marketed Christian books and Bibles to supermarkets and Christian bookstores for more than 15 years. He subsequently worked for the David C. Cook Company for six years, managing rack-jobbing inventory throughout the United States.
Music remained one of Mel’s greatest passions. He recorded 15 country gospel albums, wrote and produced countless songs, authored two books “The Thorn in the Flesh” and “The Secret Behind Paul’s Thorn in the Flesh”, and published several manuscripts, with many of his recordings such as “Pushing Buttons” reaching the number one song world-wide on GTE Music Magazine. He produced “Country Anointing”, a Saturday night Christian radio program on KJNP in North Pole, Alaska which ran for several years.
His songwriting included titles such as “Quick Draw to Forgive,” “Life Is Like an Auction,” “How Far Would You Go,” “The Law,” “Heaven a Little More Real,” “Pushing Buttons” and “Sonscreen,” along with many others. He also loved making up songs on the spot, because apparently the world never quite provided enough songs for everything Mel had to say.
For the last 14 years of his performing career, Mel served in full-time music ministry, traveling throughout the Western states to sing country gospel music at more than 200 nursing homes and retirement centers. He performed over 150 concerts a year, bringing music, encouragement, and the Gospel to thousands of people.
On September 9, 1968, Mel married Mary Louise Bennett in Boulder, Colorado. They shared 58 years of marriage and raised three children: Paul Berg, Christa Berg, and Anne Berg. Mel was a loving and affectionate father and a devoted grandfather who delighted in making his family laugh. His family will remember his playful spirit, his unforgettable performances at home, and the special memories he created with them.
Mel is survived by his beloved wife, Mary Louise Berg; his daughters, Christa Berg and Anne Berg; his brothers, Leon Berg and Gail Berg; his eight grandchildren, Timothy Tompkins, Justin Tompkins, Shawn Berg, Caleb Berg, Rachel Berg, Sara Berg, Reve Berg, and Rylen Berg; and his great-grandchild, Kaden Tompkins.
He was preceded in death by his daughter Melanie Schmehr, his son Paul Berg, and his siblings, Kenneth Wayne Berg and Marcetas Zimlich.
Mel leaves behind a legacy of faith, music, laughter, and love. He will be remembered for his deep singing voice, his humor, his generous spirit, and his unwavering commitment to sharing the message of Christ. His music and written words, along with the memories he created with his family and the many people he reached through his ministry, will continue to be part of his legacy.
