In 1939, Alice was born to Hertha and Fred Zapf in Brooklyn and moved to East Brunswick as a toddler.
Alice is survived by her grandchildren Steven Shanabarger and Nicole Becker, her sister Kathleen Nugent, and her son-in-law Donald Becker. Her daughter, Suzanne Shanabarger died in 2013.
Alice was a caring and loving person, she put these traits into her work as a nurse and unit clerk at, the former, Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood, NJ. She did not retire until the age of 72, when she decided that she no longer wanted to drive in the snow. She loved boating, crafting, gardening and traveling. She always would lend a helping hand when she could and made anyone she met laugh. She took in countless of her grandchildren’s friends as her own and always made sure we knew how much she loved us and how thankful she was for even the smallest things like a bag of her favorite candy. Alice also always displayed her love for animals, especially her fur great grandchildren, she would always check in on them before getting off of the phone, where she reminded you she loved you before hanging up.
A viewing will be held from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday, January 26th at D’Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Ave Lakewood, NJ 08701.
In place of flowers we ask that you donate in Alice’s name to Save Barnegat Bay (savebarnegatbay.org) as Alice loved to visit the lighthouses and enjoy the local water and habitats in NJ.
