

Barbara F. Miller, 82, of Lakewood, NJ, died unexpectedly, but peacefully at her home on Thursday Nov. 14, 2013. Barbara was born Sept. 13, 1931 in Plainfield, NJ to the late Thomas F. and Mary A. (Komorski) Green. She lived most of her life in Fanwood, NJ and graduated from Scotch Plains-Fanwood HS in 1949. Barbara attended classes at St. Elizabeth College while employed at Diamond Expansion Bolt Company and then RCA International. She retired from AT&T as an executive secretary before moving to Lakewood where she had a pet sitting business until the time of her death.
Barbara was an amazing and remarkable woman whose exuberance for life could only be matched by her kindness and compassion for others. She volunteered her entire life for many organizations. She had been an EMT for the Mobile Intensive Care Team and was a member of both the Fanwood and North Plainfield Rescue Squads. She also volunteered over 1000 hours at the Kimball Medical Center in Lakewood. Barbara was an active in fund raiser for Harbor House, participating in many bike tours. Barbara had a very strong faith. She was an active parishioner in the St. Mary of the Lake Church in Lakewood, where she served as an Eucharistic minister. She had many hobbies, including sewing, bocce, tennis, skiing, ice-skating, cooking and entertaining. She was avid bridge player, enjoyed music and going to the symphony. She played the violin and had been a violinist in the Summit Symphony Orchestra. She belonged to numerous clubs in the Fairways development, including the Womens, Singles, Claddagh, and Amici Clubs. She loved animals and always had pets. She was very proud, at age 79, of her time spent raising a Seeing Eye dog for a disabled teenager.
She was the cherished mother of Denise Sherwood and her husband William, Thomas Miller, Christopher Miller and his wife Sheila, and Joseph Miller and his significant other Jill Piper. She truly loved her grandchildren, Alex and David Sherwood, and Timothy Miller. She is survived by her loving sister Margaret DePiazza and her husband John, Ex-husband, Edward Miller, cat, Holly and Seeing Eye dog, Arly. Barbara had countless dear friends, who together with her family, will truly miss her. Visitation is on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the D’Elia Funeral Home, Rt. 70 & Vermont Ave., Lakewood, NJ 08701. A Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Mary of the Lake Church in Lakewood. Interment will take place at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Elizabeth, NJ on Thursday at 10:30 a.m.
