Charles Francis McGibbon, age 89, of the Greenbriar Woodlands section of Toms River, NJ, passed away on Monday, February 24, 2014, at his residence. Charles was born September 4, 1924, and he was the son of the late Francis and Loraine McGibbon. He was born in the Bronx, NY and moved at an early age to North Plainfield, NJ. He graduated from Plainfield High School in 1942. He enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, serving from 1942 to 1946 with duty in the Central South Pacific. He married Ruth Natalie Wallace in 1946 and they raised their family while living in Somerville, North Plainfield and Martinsville. He was a member of the Bound Brook Presbyterian Church of Bound Brook, NJ. He retired in 1982 as a staff manager after over 36 years with NJ Bell and Bell Labs. Upon retiring, he and his wife Ruth moved to Pine Knoll Shores, NC where they lived for 17 years. He was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Morehead City, NC and the Bogue Banks Country Club. In 1999, they returned to New Jersey and settled in Toms River.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Ruth; 3 children, Linda and Phil Massie of Leesburg, FL; Kenneth and Betsy McGibbon of Pine Knoll Shores, NC, and Nancy and Kenneth Palombi of Toms River; 5 grandchildren, Douglas McCoy, Christopher McCoy, Michael Palombi, Timothy Palombi and Jessica Palombi; 5 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandson. Relatives and friends will be received Saturday from 9 to 11 a.m. at the D’Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Ave., Lakewood, NJ 08701. His life will be celebrated with a memorial service at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. Entombment of his cremated remains will immediately follow in the Ocean County Memorial Park, Toms River, NJ.
