Douglas James Hackett, age 73, passed away peacefully at Community Medical Center in Toms River, New Jersey, on September 23, 2026.
Doug was preceded in death by his beloved wife, JoAnn; his mother, Helen; his father, Edward; and his brother, Gregg.
Raised in Merrick, Long Island, Doug attended Calhoun High School, where he excelled on the football field. His love of sports continued throughout his life, and one of his greatest joys was being there to cheer on his boys at their games and matches. He was a proud father who could always be counted on to show up and support the people he loved.
Doug worked as an engineer at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in New York City, where he put his technical knowledge and problem-solving skills to good use. He also had a remarkable talent for personalized engraving and building. There was very little he couldn’t figure out or repair, and he lived by a saying that perfectly captured his resourceful nature: “If he couldn’t fix it, it wasn’t broken.” Whether he was building something with his own hands or finding a solution to a difficult problem, Doug had a special gift for making things work.
Doug enjoyed many of life’s simple pleasures, including classic rock music, fishing, and cheering on his beloved New York Jets and New York Mets. Above all, he cherished his family and especially treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren, who brought him tremendous joy.
The greatest love of Doug’s life was his wife, JoAnn. The time they shared together was precious to him, and their love remained at the heart of his world. Their bond was a meaningful part of who he was and a lasting reminder of the love and companionship he valued so deeply.
Doug will be remembered for his resourcefulness, his passion for the things he loved, his unwavering support of his family, and his ability to leave a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to know him. He was a man who appreciated the people he met along the way and was forever grateful for everyone who crossed his path.
Doug leaves behind his loving sons, Chuck, Danny, and Gregory; his sister, Linda; his stepdaughter Gina, his cherished grandchildren; and extended family and friends who will hold his memory close to their hearts.
A celebration of Doug’s life will be planned for the Spring of 2027, when family and friends will gather to share memories and honor the life of a man who meant so much to so many.
Though Doug will be deeply missed, the memories he created, the lessons he shared, and the love he gave will live on in the hearts of his family and friends.
Rest peacefully, Dad. Your love, your wisdom, and your unforgettable words will stay with us always. You will forever be loved, forever be missed, and never be forgotten.
