Whitey was a sportsman who enjoyed fishing, skiing, golfing and hunting
throughout his life. He also loved music and could not resist dancing with the
ladies.
Edmund was born in Passaic, NJ to John and Rose Shedosky. He joined the CCC’s
in 1940 and worked in Utah on National Parks projects. On 1/19/1943 he enlisted
in the US Navy completing boot camp at Great Lakes, IL and Armed Guard School
in Gulfport, MS. He was stationed on LST-133, one of the many landing ships
involved in the D-Day Invasion. On the 3 rd trip to Normandy Beach, LST-133 was
torpedoed and many of the crew were lost. Ed’s recall of that horrible day is a
published story called The Navy Blanket. He was transferred to LST-905 in 1944
which departed New Orleans in February 1945 for the Pacific, arriving in Pearl
Harbor a month later. On April 16, 1945 the ship left Hawaii for Guam to join a
convoy underway to Okinawa. He returned to the US and was Honorably
Discharged in January 1946. He earned many medals and commendations for his
service including the American Theater Ribbon, Philippine Liberation Ribbon, and
Asiatic Pacific Theater Star.
He married Gertrude Fay on July 26, 1947 and had two children, Robert and
Debra Ann. He was widowed July 18, 1953. He was lucky to find love a second
time and married Stephanie Bebenek on October 19, 1957 and had seven more
children: Edmund (Buddy), Mark, Rose, Greg, Ray, Jerry and Chris.
Ed worked as a union bricklayer until his dream of being a fishing boat captain
was realized. He started his fishing business in 1953 with a small charter skiff
named Debra Ann mored in the Highlands Basin and the second larger Debra Ann
II in 1954. In 1956 he purchased the first party fishing boat, the Debra Ann III that
operated out of Johnny’s landing, Highlands, NJ. Enjoying the success of his party
fishing business he bought the 65’ Satellite in 1963 and the final all new Satellite
in 1986.
In 1980 Ed and Stephanie purchased property in Manalapan, NJ and started
building a new home. In 1985 they purchased property in Florida and built their
retirement home.
His body will be laid to rest with Stephanie at Brigadier General William C. Doyle
Memorial Cemetery in Wrightstown, NJ in a private ceremony.
