Elaine Adler-Amrani, passed away on February 28, 2022 at the age of 88 in Wall, NJ. She was a resident of The Four Seasons Country Club in Lakewood, NJ. Her husband of 34 years, Samuel Amrani, whom she married in Passaic, NJ in 1984, passed away in 2018.
Elaine Francis Adler was born on January 8, 1934 in Passaic, NJ to Oscar Adler and Lillian Judlowitz.
She had an older brother, Irwin Adler, who passed away in 2014. Elaine grew up surrounded by her grandparents and many aunts, uncles and cousins. She remained close to her cousins throughout her life. They would all spend each summer together when they were younger at the family compound in Valley Cottage, New York.
Elaine graduated as the Valedictorian from Passaic High School in 1951. After high school, she attended Cornell University then transferred to and graduated from Barnard College at Columbia University with a BA in Psychology. Elaine then studied Elementary Education at Paterson State College while she was working as a 4th Grade Teacher in Clifton, NJ. She went on to be Certified in NJ to teach Elementary K-8; English as a Second Language K-12; English K-12 and as an Education Supervisor. Elaine obtained her Supervisory Education Certificate from Rutgers University.
At UCLA, Elaine received her Certificate in Teaching English as a Second Language and then her MA in Education. She had a Standard Teaching Credential with a Specialization in Elementary Teaching from the State of CA.
Fluent in many languages including French, Spanish, German, Italian and Yiddish;
for many years she was a Bilingual Teacher who taught English as a Second Language at East Orange High School in NJ.
Elaine was a Life Member of the NJ Education Association, National Education Association and NJ Retired Educators’ Association. She was also an Honorary Lifetime Member of the NJ Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages and NJ Bilingual Educators; as well as a Member of the Organization for Rehabilitation through Training (ORT).
A lifelong traveler, Elaine visited many countries around the world, and loved to take cruises. From Turkish coffee to French croissants, she enjoyed the foods of many cultures. Elaine was known for her strong intellect and abilities to quickly solve the hardest of Sunday New York Times crossword puzzles, cryptograms, jigsaw puzzles and other brain teasers. She also loved to play Mahjong and cards, which she did often during her winters in Boynton Beach, Florida, when she wasn’t enjoying the beach or swimming.
Elaine is survived by her brother Irwin Adler’s children, Laurie Adler and her husband, Joseph Walker of Naples, FL; and Bruce Adler and his wife, Janice Lee of Hartsdale, NY.
A graveside funeral will take place on Wednesday, March 2, 2022 at 1pm at Beth David Cemetery in Elmont, NY.
