James J. Applegate, Sr.

James J. Applegate, Sr., age 86, of Whiting, formerly of Lakewood, died Friday evening, April 5, 2019 at the Monmouth Medical Center - Southern Campus in Lakewood, N.J. Born in Point Pleasant, James lived in Lakewood for many years before moving to Whiting. He had worked many years as an auto mechanic for Larson Ford Company in Lakewood, N.J. James was a volunteer member of the Lakewood Fire Department Company #2. He loved hunting, fishing, camping and traveling but his greatest joy was having holiday gatherings with family. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. James is survived by his wife of 66 years, Leona Applegate, a son, James Jr., a daughter and her husband, Kathy and John Rynczak; five grandchildren; Harla Mellen, Justin Applegate, Scott Applegate, Matthew Applegate, and Helene Rynczak; two great-grandchildren, Austin Mellen and Addison Applegate and two brothers, Henry Applegate and Stanley Applegate. He is also survived by nieces and nephews. Viewing hours will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2019 at the D'Elia Funeral Home, 1300 Vermont Avenue, Lakewood, N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, April 10, 2019 at St. Mary of the Lake R.C. Church, 43 Madison Avenue, Lakewood, N.J. Interment will follow at St. Mary of the Lake Cemetery, Lakewood, N.J. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the St. Jude Children's Hospital.
