July 4, 1936 – July 3, 2026
James (Jim) Paul Drago, Sr., of Lakewood, New Jersey, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family on July 3, 2026, just one day shy of his 90th birthday. Born in Brooklyn, New York, on July 4, 1936, to John and Sadie Drago, he moved with his family to Passaic, New Jersey, where he spent most of his youth and developed lifelong friendships. Jim lived a life defined by honor, service, and an unwavering devotion to his family.
Jim attended Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where he was a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity and completed the ROTC program. After graduating in 1958, he was commissioned as an officer in the United States Army. He proudly served his country for 26 years, beginning his military career in the Artillery before transitioning to Military Intelligence and Special Forces. A dedicated patriot, he served two combat tours in Vietnam, embodying the highest virtues of courage and duty. In retirement, his passions included volunteering at the local food bank and playing golf with his buddies.
While his service to his country was vast, his greatest legacy was the love he shared with his wife, Toni (the former Antoinette Lanteri). They recently celebrated a monumental milestone, marking their 66th wedding anniversary on June 26, 2026. Together, they built a life rooted in love, resilience, and family.
James was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by his beloved wife, Toni; his four children, James Jr. (Laure), John (Liz), Joseph (and his late wife, Kristen), and Janet; his siblings, Ray Tersigni (Joan) and Mike Tersigni (Pat); his eight cherished grandchildren; and his two adored great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Sadie, and his siblings, Joseph, Mario, Antoinette, Delores, and Patricia.
A service to honor and celebrate James’ life and military service will be announced by the family.
In lieu of flowers the family is asking for donations to Saint Vincent de Paul Food Bank be made in James' honor by check, writing it out to St. Vincent de Paul and either mailing it to OR dropping it off at Parish Hall - 1674 Old Freehold Rd, Toms River, NJ 08755.
