Born on January 19, 1932, in L’Isle-Verte, Quebec, Canada, Jean Claude was raised on a family farm alongside his nine siblings. The values of hard work, resilience, faith, and family that were instilled in him during those early years would guide him throughout his life.
As a young man, Jean immigrated to New Jersey where he met his first love, Florence Bozzelli. Florence taught him to read, write and speak English. Their love grew while he proudly served in the military as a tank mechanic during the Korean War. He was known throughout his Army unit as the man who received letters and delicious care packages each day from Florence.
Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Jean and Florence married in July 1955 and went on to have six beautiful children before her sudden passing in 1978.
Later, Jean was blessed to find love again with Beverly Kurzeja. They married in February 1987 combining their families. Together for 47 years, they built an active, happy life, traveling all around the world.
A gifted operator of heavy construction equipment, Jean approached his work with skill, dedication, and entrepreneurial spirit that led him to build and operate Cote Construction, a successful site work contracting business that he continued to run until he retired at 70 years old. He took great pride in his work, earned the respect of all who knew him and was often referred to as one of the good guys.
Jean also had a well-known sweet tooth. Family and friends often joked that there wasn't a dessert, pastry, candy or sweet treat he wouldn't happily enjoy.
Above all else, Jean was a family man. He is survived by his loving children and stepchildren: George Cote, Claudette Sapp, John Cote, Marguy Cote, Jerry Cote, JT Kurzeja, and Jackie Cote. He was preceded in death by his son, Gene Cote, and both wives, Florence Bozzelli Cote and Beverly Kurzeja-Cote.
He also leaves behind 10 beloved grandchildren, 4 step-grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren.
Those who knew Jean will remember a man whose smile could light up a room and whose welcoming spirit made everyone feel like family. He led by example, showing genuine love, kindness, generosity, and unwavering support to those around him. He never hesitated to lend a helping hand, offer encouragement, or simply be present when someone needed him.
Per Jean’s wishes, no formal services will be held outside of the family service. He will be laid to rest at Gate Of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover, NJ.
