Jerome (Jerry) J. Hill, 92, completed his journey in this life on 09/22/2025. He passed peacefully in his sleep. He was born in Louisville, KY on 09/25/1932 and was the son of Sylvester L. Hill and Elizabeth C. Meyer. He was one of twelve children.
Uncle Jerry touched many lives throughout his personal and professional endeavors. He was a loving husband, friend, uncle, teacher & mentor. He was brilliant, holding degrees from several universities including a PhD from Fordham University. His greatest love was teaching Chemistry. He held several positions in management and teaching. He spent 20 years as a Xaverian Brother. His most recent experience was as a principal in the New York Public School system. He and Aunt Jane loved the theater, and were members of the Lake Ridge Players, the community’s drama group.
The love of Uncle Jerry’s life and beloved wife of 36 years, Jane O’Rourke Hill, passed away before him. He was also predeceased by his close friend and travel companion, Marge Sullivan, along with two brothers, seven sisters, and friends. Uncle Jerry is survived by his two sisters, Doris Lincoln and Evelyn Galluser, his sister-in-law Katie Hill, many nieces and nephews, and those who loved him as though he were part of their own family.
Recently, when asked what advice he would offer about life, he responded by saying: “Be of service to others. Helping others brings the greatest joy.” Uncle Jerry, by his own admission, lived a full and wonderful life. His strong faith guided his actions. His legacy is one of service to others, and being the calm, gentle, and loving voice in the journey of life.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Beth Helgeson (Aunt Jane’s niece) and family and Marge Sullivan’s family for their unwavering support for Uncle Jerry over many years, along with his neighbors for their constant vigilance and support. And to his sisters for their continuous love and to Aunt Evie for her homemade cookies.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, September 28 from 2pm-6pm at D'Elia Funeral Home. A funeral mass will be offered 10:30am Monday, September 29 at St. Luke's RC Church, Toms River. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lakewood.
