

John J. Johnson, 92, passed away November 16, 2013 at his home in Lakewood. Mr. Johnson was born in “The Alley”, NYC, moving to Staten Island in 1955 before settling in Leisure Village East in Lakewood for the past 20 years. John served in the US Navy during World War II. He also served on the New York City police department for 37 years as a patrol officer. John belonged to the Holy Name society at St. Christopher’s Church in Staten Island and the American Legion in New Dorp. Recently he wrote a column called smile for your day for his community paper. He was an avid writer, jazz enthusiast, golfer and known as “Sweetswing” on his Staten Island Cargo softball team. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, great great grandfather and brother and will be greatly missed by all. Mr. Johnson is survived by his wife of 67 years Edna, children, Kathryn Brown and her husband Joseph, Patricia Daggett and her husband Robert, Joanne Haggerty and her husband Michael McNamara and Jack Johnson and his wife Gale, nine grandchildren, thirteen great grandchildren, and one great great grandson, sister, Elizabeth Lee. Friends may call Tuesday, November 19, 2013 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at the D’Elia Funeral Home Rt. 70 & Vermont Ave. Lakewood, NJ 08701. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, November 20, 2013 at 9:30AM at the Visitation Church in Brick. Cremation will be private. In lieu of flowers please make donations in John’s memory the Wounded Warrior Project of Staten Island, NY.
