Joseph F Nugent

Joseph Francis Nugent Jr., 96, of Toms River, formerly of Elizabeth NJ, passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife of almost 70 years, Anne, by his side on June 10th, 2026. Born of Irish immigrants, the late Joseph and Nora (nee Kelleher) Nugent, Joe was a proud resident of Elizabeth for most of his life, and never forgot his roots.

He was a graduate of St Benedict’s Prep, and was a proud veteran of the United States Navy, serving on the USS Tarawa (CVA-40.) He was an avid sports fan, and loved being on the golf course. In fact, after he retired from his position as Secretary of the Division of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) his final job in retirement was on a golf course until the age of 93!

Joe was a devout Catholic, and was always giving back to his community. He was an integral part of starting the North Elizabeth Youth Baseball organization, and coached many baseball and basketball teams for St. Catherine’s in Elizabeth. Joe was also a business owner operating his family business, Nugents Tavern, alongside his family. He was a friend to all and a true gentleman.

Joe is predeceased by his siblings, Rose Dowling, Judy Nugent, Daniel Nugent, and Francis (Frankie) Nugent, and his son-in-law Jake Gargano.

He is survived by his wife Anne, his children Anne Marie Gargano, Joseph (Lisa) Nugent, and Michael (Maureen) Nugent, his grandchildren Jennifer Gargano and Brian Gargano, and his sister Bella Laughlin, as well as many nieces and nephews.

The Family will receive relatives and friends at the D’Elia Funeral Home, Rt 70 and Vermont Ave, Lakewood, NJ on Sunday June 14, 2026 from 2pm-6 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Monday June 15, 2026 at St. Luke’s Roman Catholic Church, 1674 Old Freehold Rd, Toms River, NJ at 10:30 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
