For more than 40 years, she and her husband, Robert “Bob,” were residents of Teaneck where they were active members of the community. A native of Buffalo, NY and proud graduate of Cornell University, Tess met Bob at Cornell in 1946 where he was completing an engineering degree on the GI Bill after returning from service in WWII. After raising their two children, Tess earned an MLS at Rutgers and worked as a librarian at the Teaneck Public Library for over 25 years. In middle age, she took up running and completed two marathons. After Bob passed away in 2005, she moved to Harrogate and participated in several Senior Olympics track events well into her nineties. Tess also loved painting and won awards in several art shows for her pencil drawings and her watercolors. Her family and friends will hold her forever in their hearts and cherish her indomitable spirit, her unwavering optimism, kindness and generosity and her deep devotion to her family.
She is survived by a daughter, Lies Chartier, son, Kenneth, daughter-in-law, Regina, and grandchildren: Samantha; Andrew and wife, Kimberly; Jeremy; and Lilly, as well as several nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to thank the staff at Harrogate for the loving and compassionate care they provided for their mother and for the family.
A celebration of life is planned at a future date.
In lieu of flowers, her children would appreciate donations to a scholarship that they are creating for a first-generation undergraduate student at Ramapo College. Gifts may be sent to: Ramapo College Foundation, 505 Ramapo Valley Road, Mahwah, NJ 07430. Please indicate “Robert and Tess Greenquist Scholarship” or at https://www.ramapo.edu/giving/how-to-give/
