A Noble Woman…
On April 25, 1932, the name of Bettye Bell Williams was penned in the book of Life. Born to the late Herman and Lilly Williams, Bettye grew up on the mainland, was educated in La Marque public schools, and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1950.
Her spiritual journey began at Bell Zion Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Reverend Wiley Dunn. As a lifelong member of Bell Zion Baptist Church, Bettye was active and rendered dedicated service as a youth Sunday School teacher and in the Missionary Society (Martha Circle).
Cherished and nurtured by her family, Bettye ventured off to college at Prairie View A & M University; there she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education. She returned to her hometown and diligently served her community as a teacher in the La Marque Independent School District for 37 years. After retirement in 1987, Bettye was eager to be of continued service and she volunteered as a reading mentor in the Hitchcock Independent School District. This was a true testimony of her love and commitment to the children and the community. Throughout her career, the extraordinary educator held membership in many professional and civic organizations: Texas State Teachers Association, Texas Classroom Teachers Association, and Friends in Touch.
Throughout her lifetime, Bettye Williams Brown garnered the love and support of many lifelong friends and co-workers. She was valued for her honesty and her sincere concern for others.
Bettye had a zest for living and a vast capacity for loving. She relished the joy of traveling and enjoyed spending time with family and friends. She met and married the love of her life, Eugene “Chico” Brown. To this blessed union, three children were born: Roderick, Terri, and Patrick.
Bettye Brown was many things to many people:a devoted wife, a loving mother, a doting grandmother, a loyal sister, a wise aunt, a caring relative, and a cherished friend. God sent his angel to receive her soul on September 1, 2019.
Those left to cherish her memory are two sons, Roderick (Gina) Brown and Patrick Brown; daughter Terri (Michael) Randle; seven grandchildren, Lauren Brown, Alexia Brown, Osha Randle III “Trey”, Teylar Randle, Amina Brown, Malik Brown, and Ahmad Brown; one great-grandchild, Aliyah Brown; brothers, Victor Williams and Herman (Melba) Williams, Jr.; a host of nieces, nephews, cousin and friends.
