Edith Phillips

The beautiful and fulfilled life of Edith Marie Phillips began on December 6, 1928 in Pledger, Texas. She began her formal education in the public schools of Matagorda County, Texas. After graduation, she attended Paul Quinn College in Waco, Texas where she graduated with her Bachelor of Science. She continued her education by attending Texas Southern University, Houston and Texas A&M University, Kingsville, Texas. At an early age she accepted Christ and was baptized at Union Missionary Baptist Church in Pledger, Texas. She later attended Mother Zion Baptist Church in Bay City, Texas. On February 12, 1951, she united in marriage to the love of her live, Lonnie Phillips, Jr. Together they made their home in Texas City and reared their family. Continuing her walk with the Lord, she united with Greater Bell Zion Missionary Baptist Church in Texas City under the leadership of the late Pastor Wiley L. Dunn, Sr. She worked diligently in the church serving in the Sanctuary Choir, a Deaconess of the church, member of the General Missionary Society, Vacation Bible School Principal and taught Sunday School. Her community activities include: member of Silver Circle Chapter #101Order of Eastern Star; and a former member of Pride of La Marque Court #457 of Calanthe. Mrs. Phillips began her teaching career in the La Marque Public School System at Woodland Elementary School and later Lincoln High School. She continued her teaching at La Marque Intermediate School, nurturing the lives of all she came in contact with. On July 7, 2013 she departed this earthly life to be with the Lord. She is preceded in death by her parents, Odessa Plummer Davenport and Ervin Davenport. Left to celebrate memories of her life are her devoted and loving husband of 62 years, Lonnie Phillips, Jr.; her children, Lance Ervin Phillips, Ava Feliece Phillips and Kevin Campbell; a loving and beloved niece, Charmaine Shannon; 8 grandchildren; and a host of family members, her Greater Bell Zion Church Family, co-workers, students and many friends.
