

Jourman (Jimmie) Randolph Hobbs was born to Obadiah and Lillie Winfield Hobbs on January 14, 1922 in League City, Texas. He was the youngest of eight siblings. A product of League City, Texas schools and a lifetime resident, Jourman still resides at 308 Hobbs Road in the home that he built with help from family and friends. Reflecting back on his childhood, he remembers walking the two-and-a-half miles to school and then two-and-a-half miles back home. A World War II Veteran and the grandson of Buffalo Soldier, Alex Winfield, at the age of twenty, Jourman enlisted in the U.S. Army on November 5, 1942 in Houston, Texas. Official records show that he served his country with distinction from November 7, 1942 to October 31, 1945. Rising to the rank of Sergeant, he received the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with one bronze star, a good conduct medal, and four Overseas Service bars. At the end of his service, he was honorably discharged from the United States Army. After serving his country, Jourman returned to League City where he married Retha Hobbs on February 8, 1947. The product of a Christian home, he united in fellowship with Winfield Chapel Methodist Church in League City, Texas and was baptized on August 6, 1950. The church later merged with Faith United Methodist Church in Dickinson, Texas where Jourman served as a faithful and loyal member for more than half a century, ever faithful in his attendance, he participated with the Brotherhood and served as a Trustee. Always a hard worker, Jourman worked for Amoco Refinery for 14 years. Over 50 years ago, he was hired by Walter G. Hall & Sons. Jourman has been a Mason for over 57 years. His hobbies included fishing, hunting and wood work. At age 85 he was still mowing his own lawn. Family and Friends close to him have known him as being a quiet hardworking, humble man, who lived by the opening words of his favorite scripture, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…”. Jourman was a loving and devoted father, leaving cherished memories with his caring children: Jimmie (Dr. Elder Elizabeth) Hobbs, Valrico, Florida; Sandra Williams, Katy, Texas; Ruthie Hobbs Coaxum (Pastor Richard Coaxum), Pflugerville, Texas and Elaine (Rodney) Harvey, Houston, Texas. A host of beloved grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, other family member’s, church family and many dear friends left to cherish his memories. A special thanks to his granddaughter, Yolanda Hobbs who was devoted to caring for “PaPa” for years. Jourman is preceded in death by his parents Obie Sr. and Lillie Hobbs; Retha Hobbs ,former wife and mother of his children, his son, Andrew L. Hobbs, two sisters, Mary Geters & Ivory Thornton, and three brothers, Obie Hobbs Jr., Clarence Hobbs, and Burel Hobbs.
