Mrs. Lula Mae Daniels, 97, of Texas City passed away on Friday June 20, 2014 at her residence in the presence of her family. Mrs. Daniels, the third of twelve children born to George and Paralee Davis Scott entered this world on July 26, 1916. She was born in Fayette County Texas, just outside the city limits of LaGrange, where she attended a one-room schoolhouse. Ruby graduated after completing the eighth grade and then helped her mother with the younger children while working a number of part-time jobs. On April 5, 1942 Ruby married Curtis Daniels, and in June of the same year he was inducted into the United States Army. While Curtis was away, Ruby attended and graduated with a Cosmetology Degree from the Franklin Beauty College in San Antonio, TX. After Curtis was honorably discharged in November 1945, the couple moved to Houston and then to La Marque where they built their lives together. Although Curtis and Ruby had no natural children, they raised a niece, Jean, who became their child. Throughout the years, Ruby and Curtis owned or co-owned and operated a variety of small businesses, including a sand and top soil company, grocery store and service station. Ruby retired from Mainland Medical Center in 1987, but she did not retire from working. She promptly opened a child daycare center, which she operated for the next ten years. An entrepreneur at heart, she also sold cool cups to neighborhood children and was given the moniker "cool cup lady." When kids did not have enough or no money, she donated her goods. Ruby was a faithful member of the Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church for over sixty years. She loved her church and throughout the years had been active in many organizations (e.g. Ministers and Deacons Wives, Senior Mission 1, Mission Chorus, Senior Usher board, etc.); however, she derived her greatest joy from working as a youth matron for many years and teaching in vacation bible school. Being a life-long learner, she also loved attending Sunday school classes and diligently completed all homework assignments. She always called Jean to report her grades on returned work. Mrs. Daniels was also a fifty+-year member of the Sweet Aster Court #327, Heriones of Jericho-Texas Jurisdiction. Mrs. Daniels was predeceased by her husband of 59 years, parents, and eight siblings. She is survived by twin brothers, Floyd Scott Sr. of Houston and Lloyd Scott and wife Elnora of Alta Dena, CA.; one sister, Doris Jones of San Antonio; daughter, Dr. Verna Jean Henson, PhD Emerita of Kyle, TX; beloved grandchildren: Michelle Stokes and husband, David of Texas City, Charlotte Monica Jones of Texas City and Charles Jenkins of Houston; cherished great-grandchildren: Jeremy and Cierra Smith, Colin and Caleb Jones, Corbin Green, Josiah Jenkins-Shelby and Charles Jr. and Chaz Jenkins; precious great-great grandchild, Caylee Jones; Sisters-in-law: Mabel Britton and Josephine Daniels of La Marque and Ethel Daniels of Texas City; Brother-in-law, Robert Williams of Texas City; God child, Voncil Cobb of Texas City and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. The visitation and viewing will be held from 9 to 11 a.m. followed by the celebration of life on Saturday, June 28 at Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church. Pastor D.N. Benford Sr. will deliver the eulogy. The committal service will be held on June 30 at Veteran's National Cemetery, Houston.
