On a special day January 16, 1965, God’s image of Rufus Derrick Edwards became flesh. His parents, Willie George and Jodie Edwards welcomed his arrival with great joy! He was the youngest of three children. Rufus as a young child was outgoing and spontaneous. He was nurtured in a loving Christian home. He dedicated his life to the Lord at an early age and was baptized at his family's church Rising Star Missionary Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. D. N. Benford, Sr. He was educated in the public schools of La Marque Independent School District. His easy going persona endeared him to his classmates and friends. He was a proud La Marque Cougar graduating with the Class of 1983. While at La Marque High School he played football, basketball and track. His skills on the football field earned him a scholarship to Texas Southern University. Rufus was also called Derrick by his family and friends. He lived in Charlotte North Carolina and worked at East Coast Metal Distributors as a Supervisor. He later moved to Lewisville, Texas and worked at National Duct Systems and Redi-Mix. From a young age he had a love of sports and spent much of his time watching sporting events in person and on TV. Just as his father coached him as a child he continued that legacy with his sons, coaching pee wee football and baseball and basketball. John 10:28 And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. Our beloved father, brother, uncle, nephew and cousin, Rufus Derrick Edwards on April 29, 2017, left his earthly life to receive his eternal life’s reward. He was preceded in death by his parents, Willie George and Jodie Edwards; his maternal grandparents, Joseph and Alberta Davis; his paternal grandparents, Rufus and Dorothy Edwards; his brother, Gregory Edwards. He is survived by his family, Daral Crittendon-Edwards; his sons, Terrick Edwards and Dylan Edwards; his sister, Janice Bryant; his aunts, Marie (Carl) Lowe, Patricia (Oscar) Richardson and Bertha (Edward) Chadwick; his uncles, Charles (Debra) Davis and James Davis; his nephews, Brandon Bryant, Ryan Bryant and Alonzo Crittendon III; and a host of other family members and friends.
