

Virgie Lee Toliver was born June 30, 1930 in Waxahachie, Texas to the union of Sandy and Louise Wallace. Virgie was educated in the public schools of Waxahachie and attended and graduated from Oaklawn School. At an early age, she united with New Mt. Zion Baptist Church and was baptized. Virgie moved to Texas City in 1951 and united with Greater Barbour’s Chapel Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Pastor J. H. Scott. She served in the Missionary Society (Mary Circle) and a member of the Sunday School. She diligently worked at Mainland Center Hospital in Texas City for over 35 years. She worked in various departments and retired in 1992 as Supervisor of Escort Services. She was united in marriage to Ernest Toliver in October of 1977. She and her husband were very active in the community. She was a member of the Mainland Branch NAACP and A. Phillip Randolph Society; and was very instrumental in campaigning for persons running for elected positions on the local, State and National level. After a long, well-lived life, Virgie entered her eternal rest on January 14, 2016 at her home with her loved ones by her side. She is preceded in death by her parents, Louise and Sandy Wallace Sr.; her husband, Ernest Toliver; and siblings, Sandy Wallace Jr., Earnest Wallace, Helen Chatman, Mary Francis Collins, Prentiss Wallace and Robert Lee Wallace. Left to celebrate her legacy of “LOVE” are her devoted children, Carolyn (Wendell) May, Larry (Rita) Stewart and Pamela Stewart; her grandchildren, Tracy (Tracy) Howard, Shawna Archie, Ashley (Jamaiel) Dickerson, Larry (Tralanda) Stewart Jr., Syreeta (Marlon) Watkins, Amber Wallace and Ernest Tolliver; great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Archie, Ashton Howard, Nataniyah Stewart, Amariyah Stewart, Kaiyah Stewart, Mya Watkins and Marlon Watkins, Jr.; great-great-grandchildren, Jamari Dickerson, Jaidyn Dickerson and Zuri Dickerson; a special son and daughter, Edwin and Ethel Shelton; a special sister, Saline (Billy) Merchant; special family friends, Deacon William Shorter, Martha Swan and Juanita Jackson; and a host of nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
