Loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, David Keller Miller Sr. passed peacefully to join Mary, his wife of 68 years, on August 1, 2025 at 96 years old. Dave was born July 9, 1929, in Lancaster, Ohio, to the late Charles & Rose (Keller) Miller.
Dave graduated from Lancaster High School in 1947 and Ohio Wesleyan University in 1951, earning a BA in Fine Arts where he was a member of the Sigma Chi Fraternity, lettering in swimming and sailing. He was in the Ohio National Guard from high school through college, then enlisted in the Army in 1951 after graduating from college. While in the Army, he was stationed in Washington D.C. with the Counter Intelligence Corps, and achieved the rank of Staff Sargent. During that time, he and mom were married in 1953. After his service in the Army, they moved back to Lancaster where they raised their family. He joined the family business, the Good Housekeeping Shop, and eventually took over ownership from his mother, working there for 72 years.
Many people knew him by his hobby of painting and detailing wildfowl carvings, many of which were displayed throughout his appliance store, the Good Housekeeping Shop. He also loved to do landscape paintings of his favorite places such as Sanibel Island, Florida and Burt Lake, Michigan.
He was an avid General William T. Sherman and Civil War buff, making several trips to historical Civil War battlefields and immersing himself in reenactments.
He loved the Lord, music, and being on his sailboat. Most often it was just for leisure on either Buckeye Lake, Lake Michigan, or Burt Lake, but he also sailed competitively, racing on Buckeye Lake with his wife and kids as his crew.
He loved capturing the beauty of God’s world through a camera lens as an artistic nature photographer. Though his favorite things to photograph were birds, landscapes, butterflies and family, whatever he was doing, he always had his camera with him.
He truly was a life-long learner which added to the fullness of his life. Because of that, his family has learned how to have access to the beautiful, passionate parts of their lives and live life full of adventure.
Left to cherish his memory are his children, David (Christine) Miller, Jr., Cindy (Jeff) Stai, Dan (Rose) Miller, Jenny Miller, and his sister Sally (Lowell) Stallsmith. His grandchildren, Olivia (Todd) Rowley, Nathan Phillips, David (Elizabeth) Miller III, Julia (Michael) Brunelle, Catherine (Michael) Edwards, Andrew Miller, Alex (Allie) Miller, Jacob (Carina) Leitnaker, Sarah (Ryan) Eversole and Rachael Leitnaker also survive him.
Great grandchildren Atticus Miller, Lincoln Miller, Lennox Miller, Ava Rowley, Alyce Miller, Angel Miller, Solomon Miller and Maribell Eversole survive him as well.
The family would like to give a special thank you to the staff at Home Helpers and Fairhope Hospice for their compassionate care. The family also kindly asks that contributions can be made in memory of Dave to Fairhope Hospice, or a charity of your choice.
Visitation will be held at the First Presbyterian Church on Saturday, August 9th, 2025 from 10:00am to 1:00pm. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, August 9th, 2025 at 1:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Nathan Loudon, officiating. Burial will follow at Maple Grove Cemetery.
