Helga Treitmaier, age 84 of Medina, Ohio (formerly of Lancaster, Ohio), passed away peacefully on September 29, 2023. She was born on July 20, 1939 in Engertsham, Germany, to the late Josef Schned and Magdalena Anetsberger Schned. She married the love of her life Joseph Treitmaier and immigrated to the United States at the age of 19. The journey took 11 days from Bremen, Germany to Le Havre, France, to Southampton, England, to Cobh, Ireland, then across the ocean to Halifax, Canada and finally arriving in New York harbor to see the Statue of Liberty on June 5, 1958. Life was not always easy for her and husband Joseph, however they persevered in life and built a beautiful family, business, legacy, and traditions that will always be remembered by our family. Despite her large family Helga always made time for everyone. She enjoyed attending and watching numerous sporting events and school programs, making baby blankets, reading, gardening, and traveling. For those of us blessed with knowing Helga, she is also remembered by many as our beloved Oma. We will always have wonderful memories of Christmas gatherings, playing spoons, attending midnight mass at St. Bernadette church, and eating all her traditional German food. She built many traditions for the family, whether it was building gingerbread houses with the grandchildren, coloring eggs at Easter, thanksgivings or just an impromptu Sunday family dinner or cookout. Helga spent 40 years as a chef for Shaw’s Restaurant in Lancaster, Ohio, where her passion for cooking left the customers with memories of warmth, kindness, and delicious cooking, especially the cinnamon rolls. She was also known for her talent of whipping up a gourmet meal with very little in the fridge and passed this talent and love down to her daughters and grandchildren. Left to celebrate Helga’s life are her 5 loving children, daughter, Monica (Timothy) Hampson; son, Manfred (Jane Burleigh) Treitmaier; daughter; Debbie (Michael) Hall; son, John (Tracy Hines) Treitmaier; daughter; Marlina Jones, 19 grandchildren 35 great grandchildren and 2 great- great grandchildren.
