
James R. “Jim” Slater, 90, of Lancaster passed away on October 28, 2024. Jim was born on May 19, 1934 to the late Albert E. and Henrietta Slater. He was a bright young man, graduating in 1952 and went on to attend Ohio State University, earning his Master’s Degree in Engineering. Jim proudly served in the United States Army and was known for his integrity, intelligence and kindness. He was faithfully married to his wife Sharon since January 26, 1973.
He became a prominent figure in the Lancaster community, being very active in many hobbies and creating meaningful relationships with people. Jim ran the family business, Slater’s Hardware, along with his brother, Jon Slater Sr. until retiring in 1999. Jim was a diligent businessman and then went on to use his business expertise to assist his wife Sharon with her business, Wee Care Pet Service. He was the last surviving founding member of F.O.R.K.S (Fairfield Ohio Radio Kontrol Society). In 1982, he became a very active member of First Baptist Church, always attending every Sunday and Wednesday until 2022. Up until his final days, Jim maintained fellowship with friends and family and was always up for a good cup of black coffee. He enjoyed engaging in meaningful conversations. Being a man full of wisdom and strong shoulders, he was an easy person to confide in.
Jim is survived by his wife of nearly 52 years, Sharon Slater; brother, Jon (Carol) Slater; daughters, Jackie Slater and Oleta Adams; grandchildren, Davis Papson, Jesse Adams and Zakk Adams; along with his nephews, Jon (Melodi) Slater Jr., Steve (Susie) Slater; niece, Lou Ann (Randy) Wiesenstien; and many other living family and friends.
A soul the likes of which is rare in the world today, Jim will live on in the hearts and minds of the many friends, family and acquaintances, that not only loved and respected him, but admired him for the truly great man that he was.
Per Jim’s wishes Dignity Cremation is to take place through the HALTEMAN-FETT & DYER FUNERAL HOME. A Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Church (1950 Pleasantville Rd, Lancaster, OH 43130) Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 1:00 PM.
