A life well lived is measured not only by the years, but by the memories made and the lives touched. Born on April 9, 1929, Orval D. Ricketts spent 97 years sharing laughter, kindness, hard work, and an unforgettable smile with everyone fortunate enough to know him. On Wednesday, July 1, 2026, he passed away peacefully at The Pickering House in Lancaster.
Orval was born just moments before his twin brother, Oren, and was one of ten children. As the last surviving member of his family, he carried with him a lifetime of cherished memories and stories.
He enjoyed working on the farm throughout his life and helping family on their farms whenever he was needed. He also dedicated 22 years to serving local schools as a custodian, working five years at Fairfield Union Schools and 17 years at Lancaster City Schools. He took pride in hard work and the friendships he made along the way.
Music was one of Orval's greatest joys. He loved bluegrass and gospel music and especially enjoyed attending live performances whenever he had the chance. If there was music playing, there was a good chance he was listening, tapping his foot, or out on the dance floor. Many also knew him by his CB radio handle, "Old Farmer." As a child, Orval attended Fletcher Chapel United Methodist Church. Later in life, he attended The Oakthorpe Church for many years, where he enjoyed worship, music, and spending time with his church friends.
He will be remembered for his contagious smile, his ornery sense of humor, and the endless stories he loved to tell. He never met a stranger and had a special way of making people laugh and feel welcome.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ora and Mary Esther (Hoover) Ricketts; his brothers and sisters, Thurman, Thelma, Lucille, Ora Jr., Lowell, Esther Mae, Oren, Lester, and Rita; and his granddaughter, Danielle Wolfe.
He is survived by his wife of almost 72 years, Shirley (McCafferty) Ricketts; his daughters, Sharon (Mike) Drumm, Debbie (Doug) Mead, and Becky (Tim) Wolfe; his grandchildren, Jenni Hill, Wendy (Chip) Pritsel, Michelle (Mark) Hammond, Derek (Kassie) Wolfe, Kristen (Billy) Price, Devan (Brian) Roof, and Drew (Bret) Wolfe; his great-grandchildren, Casey (Tyler), Stephen (Kara), Dustin, Jace (Kaitlin), Owen, Rosie (Mason), Aurora, Gage, Kolten, Ryleigh, Blenn, RJ, Lucas, and Emery; his great-great-grandchild, Kylie; and many extended family members and dear friends.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Altercare Thornville and The Pickering House for the care, compassion, and kindness they showed Orval and his family.
Orval's legacy is one of love, laughter, faith, and family. His stories will continue to be shared, his favorite music will continue to bring smiles, and his contagious smile will be remembered by all who knew and loved him.
A private graveside service will be held. There will be no calling hours or public funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fletcher Chapel United Methodist Church, The Oakthorpe Church or The Pickering House in Orval's memory.
