Thomas "Tom" E. Douglas Sr.

March 21, 1931January 6, 2021

Thomas (Tom) Eugene Douglas, Sr. made his sacred transition to be with our mother and heavenly father on January 6, 2021. He was born on March 21, 1931 to Charles and Lilly Douglas of Lancaster Ohio and was the last living of their 8 children. Tom started working at the age of 5 on the back of a milk truck and was a bellhop in Lancaster and Columbus both while he attended and graduated from Lancaster High School. After serving his country in the United States Air Force, he met and married Bonnie Ruth Douglas (deceased) to whom he was married to for 57 years. Tom and Bonnie raised five children: Joni Brookover, Tom Douglas Jr. (Peggy), Mark Douglas (Jane Laurel), Laine Douglas, and Rae Ellen Douglas. He was a civil servant through his contributions as a policeman, a city income tax commissioner, and as a leader for the Ohio Department of Transportation. Simultaneous to that Tom built homes, bought and rented commercial as well as residential properties, and managed his own real estate company: Tom Douglas Real Estate. He raised his family at Calvary Lutheran Orthodox Church where he attended and served in many leadership capacities over more than fifty years. Tom also was a member of The Fairfield County Board of Developmental Disabilities. Also beloved to him was his time spent as a Master Mason, 32nd Degree Mason and Shriner. Tom also enjoyed local, collegiate, and NFL football, music spanning many genres and artists, and comedy. He loved to make people laugh and being made to laugh as much as anything. In his retirement, he and Bonnie travelled extensively throughout the US and Europe, attended concerts galore, and spent as much time as was given them with their many, many grandchildren. His greatest act of love on this earth was his commitment to his daughter, Laine. His 50 years of devotion to her advocacy and life were infallible. He leaves behind his five children, more than 30 grand and great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a legacy of hard work, love, and generosity. We’d like to thank the team at Fairfield Medical Center for their care while he battled COVID-19. Their compassion and their excellence in communication with his family were felt deeply. Visitation will be held on Monday, January 11th, 2021 from 5PM-7PM at the HALTEMAN-FETT & DYER FUNERAL HOME. Private Services are to be held on Tuesday with a burial to be conducted with Military Honors at Maple Grove Cemetery in Lancaster. A Livestream of the services can be seen on the HALTEMAN-FETT & DYER FUNERAL HOME FACEBOOK PAGE at 10AM on Tuesday. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be given to the Fairfield Medical Center Foundation (401 N. Ewing St. Lancaster, OH 43130 or online at https://www.fmchealth.org/foundation/)
