Affectionately known as Mike.
Mike’s legacy will be carried on by his 7 children: Edward (Ellen), Debra (John), Richard (Bonnie), Laurie (Dave), Terry (Victoria), Kimberley (Eric) & Leah (Mike) plus 19 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren. Mike was predeceased by Donna, his wife of 58 years.
Mike was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, the eldest of 8 children. He was an altar boy, sea cadet, and a regular at Grand Beach where he met the girl next door and his future wife Donna. Together they moved to Edmonton, Yellowknife, Burnaby and eventually to Fort Langley where they created a family home full of love and memories for the next 34 years.
Mike worked for CNR for several years while he went to night school to eventually become a Certified Accountant. Mike’s job gave him opportunities to travel to many parts of Canada and an opportunity to work and live in Kiev, Ukraine with Donna for 3 months.
After he retired in 1995, Mike and Donna began to see the world. They travelled in their RV, on planes, cruise ships and trains. Mike loved to travel and always had his next trip planned. When Donna wasn’t able to travel anymore, Mike continued his adventures and took some memorable trips with some of his children & grandchildren.
Mike always found the time to volunteer. He coached our childhood sports teams and was a founding member and secretary for the non-profit organization F.O.E. Langley for several decades. At Christmas he could be spotted ringing the Salvation Army bells outside of local shops, volunteered at the Fort Langley Historic Site and drove cancer patients to and from their appointments.
Mike enjoyed taking pictures, reading, playing golf, gardening, feeding the goats and picking raspberries but what Mike enjoyed most was being with his family. He was willing and able to adapt to our interests and was just happy to be there. He often would research topics we were interested in to engage in some amazing conversations.
After Donna passed in 2017 he moved in to a condo with a beautiful view of the Fraser River in Fort Langley. He found a love for cooking & baking that he proudly served to guests. He enjoyed sitting on his balcony with a glass of wine, people watching, listening to the trains and watching the rowers in the river.
Mike passed peacefully at home, just as he wanted. He was surrounded and showered with love and support by his family.
We did it Dad! Rest In Peace.
Mike’s Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, September 27, 2022 at 1pm: Henderson’s Funeral Home 20786 Fraser Highway, Langley B.C.
