Janet was born in Calgary, Alberta on April 7, 1945, to Ailie and Cyril Caldwell. Her family moved
to Guelph, Ontario, then to The Bahamas, Comox BC, and Burnaby BC, where her father died when
Janet was seven years old. Janet attended 11 different schools before graduating from Aldergrove High
School in 1963. She attended Trinity Junior College in Langley, Biola University in Los Angeles, and UBC where she gained her teachers accreditation.
In 1968 Janet married Dave Martens and together they raised their two children and expanded their home to include Brad Johnson and Diane Seddon, a special needs angel who God put in their care for 20 years.
Janet started her teaching career at Otter Elementary in 1967 and then took time off to raise her children and complete her Degree at TWU in 1989, before returning to teach at Langley Fundamental School. She
excelled as a teacher-librarian and was adored by her students and greatly appreciated by the parents and staff.
She retired from teaching in 2003 in order to pursue her passion for flower gardening and to travel with Dave, both in their RV and to visit places in the world they had always dreamed of seeing. The way Janet loved and served others sprang from her unwavering faith in God and her life purpose to live for Him.
She consistently opened her heart, her purse, and her home to reach out to those in need. As a result, there is a great multitude of recipients of that love who cherish her in return.
Janet is survived by her husband of 55 years, Dave, daughter Shannon (Kevin) Lawrence, son Jay (Krista) Martens, “adopted” son Brad (Myra) Johnson, Grandchildren - Ben and Noah Lawrence, Rebecca and Jack Martens, Sisters - Jean (Bill) Arnold, Erin (Mike) Caldwell plus a very large extended family.
There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate Janet’s life on September 2nd at 1pm at Town + Field Church located at 20719 48th Avenue, Langley, BC.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Janet’s memory to Trinity Western University 22500 University Drive, Langley BC V2Y 1Y1 Re: Ailie Caldwell Memorial Scholarship Email: [email protected]
