Jean Rebecca Rawluk “Becky” was born in New Glasgow Nova Scotia to parents David I Fulton and Helen (Dunn) Fulton. When she was 3 years old, she lost her mother and infant sister to illness at childbirth. Becky was raised by her maternal grandparents John and Jeanne Dunn in Merigomish Nova Scotia, as her father worked out of town.
Following High School Becky attended Montreal General Hospital School of Nursing during WWII, graduating in 1945. She worked at the Montreal General until September 1949, as RN in charge of a 40 bed women’s surgical unit. She continued her career in BC at the Royal Jubilee Hospital, Victoria. The Vancouver General Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver.
In 1949 Becky moved to BC in search of Fulton relatives. She found many of her relatives over the years and met her husband George through her cousin in Victoria. They married in 1952 and moved to a small farm in Langley in 1954, where they raised 4 daughters and many animals including Holstein cows. Becky delivered many calves on that farm. And was often called upon by neighbours to use her nursing skills.
Becky was an active volunteer in the Langley community. From PTA in her daughter’s schools to President of the Langley Association for the Mentally Handicapped (Inclusion Langley Society). When her third daughter was born in 1959 with Down Syndrome, she became an advocate for people with developmental disabilities. She was a driving force behind the first school in Langley and later, services for adults with developmental disabilities. Becky also helped organize one of the first summer recreational programs in Langley for children with disabilities.
Family was very important to Becky, she always remembered birthdays for our extended family and friends. There were many family gatherings of Rawluk and Fulton relatives over a meal. Over the years she kept her connections to Nova Scotia family and dear friend Jean Mahoney. Becky was very proud of her granddaughters and their accomplishments.
Becky celebrated her 100th birthday in June with her daughters and granddaughters.
Thank you to Dr. Borg and the Fort Langley Seniors Community staff for your care of Becky over the last 2 years.
And a special thank you to Bonnie for your regular visits to Mom in care.
A private celebration of life will be held for close family and friends.
