Dear Uncle Bob, Linda, Keith, Sarah, Kyle, Simon and Madeline.

I was so sorry to hear of Auntie Kay's untimely and unfair passing. I can only imagine how you are all feeling. She was a rare gem; so much like my Mom, only a kinder, gentler version.  When we got together at family gatherings, Auntie Kay was so quick to provide a big smile and a warm hug, always interested in each of our lives. She had such an easy nature and such a great laugh.

I was so delighted to see Auntie Kay and Uncle Bob in Bragg Creek when my Mom passed away.  It meant a lot that they came all that way on icy , November roads. Hard to believe this will be 10 years since then. 

I am sure that Mom and Gammie & Granddad were there to greet her, and she is smiling down on all of you.

Kay was a very loving person. You could see that especially in her family relationships. You could tell by her affection for her family: the hugs and kisses, the praise for their accomplishments and talents, the time she spent with them during her & husband Bob’s visits in the summer or during our trips to see them at Christmas. 

When Madeline was born, Kay & Bob travelled across the country to help us through the demanding early days & provide much needed support and tips.
Later, they would regularly travel across the country to celebrate birthdays, to camp and go site seeing. I particularly enjoyed the sketching trips and art discussions. We would draw and paint together & Kay and I would often compare notes, debate techniques, and argue which mediums were better. She was firmly in the realistic gouache and pastel camps, while I prefer loose watercolour and ink sketches. We would debate the finer points of each medium and the merits of different art styles. I loved her passionate opinion and commitment to craft and learning. 

We would have family “paint offs” to flex our artistic muscles within a limited time. We often went to the “candy store” (art supply store) to fuel our inspiration beforehand and would emerge from the shop with sketchbooks, paints, pencils, and pens in hand to use in the challenge. It was skewed towards having fun and I remember Kay often making good-natured humourous comments and even laughing at the results.

During our visits Kay would always enquire after my parents and how they were doing. When dad’s health declined, she offered to help in any way possible and she and Bob provided an old walker of hers that he could use. When dad died, she spoke comforting words gave me lots of hugs.

Goodbye Kay, I will miss your sharp opinions, playful sense of humour and your compassion. But your influence lives on in my memories: you took the time to be with those who mattered most to you and it showed.

Dear Gran,

I remember how you taught me to French braid my hair for the first time, and how you used to let me practice on your hair for hours. I remember how patient you were and how you smiled when I finally got it right. 

I remember the first watercolor set you got me, and how excited I was to learn to be an artist like you. I remember painting picture after picture, desperately trying to do something amazing so I could impress you. I remember how frustrated I got when I made a mistake and how you told me that there are no mistakes in art. I remember sending you my first finished painting in the mail and how you sent me a picture in return. I remember hanging up that picture in my room and how it always made me think of you. 

I remember the pink Minnie Mouse dress you made for me. I remember how that dress used to hang past my knees and how I wore it until it was just a little too short because I couldn’t bear to let it go. I remember how special I felt that you had made something just for me, and I remember feeling like the luckiest granddaughter in the world.

I remember going camping with you and Grampa in your RV and how excited I was to spend time with you. I remember driving up to Santee and how you always saved mints for me in the car. I remember sitting around the campfire and listening to stories and feeling awed by you and your life. I remember how you always did something special for me and how you always made me feel so loved.

I remember the first time my dad told me how much I reminded him of you. I remember him saying that I was so stubborn, just like Gran. And I remember how proud I felt to be like you. 

I remember hearing your voice over the phone every week. I remember how much I missed you and how happy I was when I got to visit. I remember how warm your hugs were and how you always kissed my cheek. I remember how you always told me you loved me loads and tons. 

Most of all, though, I remember how much I loved you. 

I’ll never forget. 


Uncle Bob, Linda, Keith and family,  I am so sad to hear of Auntie Kay’s passing.  My thoughts are with all of you.  She was a special lady and will be missed.  I came across this picture of my mom, Bob and Auntie Kay that I hope you’ll enjoy.

I have so many wonderful memories of Kay.  She was a very kind, loving lady with a great 'impish' sense of humor.  
She loved her children, Linda and Keith, so much.  I was blessed to have been accepted as a daughter when I married Keith.  I loved watching her play with all of her grandchildren; Sarah, Kyle and Madeline, when they were little.  
Bob and Kay would come down to visit us in San Diego as often as possible and they would take each of the kids on their own special overnight camp-out in the trailer.  The kids always returned home so excited about all the fun times they had shared with their Gran and Grampa.
Kay loved to paint and she would sit for hours working on pictures of all her favorite places she had traveled to.  Kay enjoyed nothing more than sharing her love of art with her grandchildren.
Her wicked sense of humor is what I loved the most.  I remember going over to her house in North Vancouver after Keith and I were engaged and her calling me into the kitchen to tell me that I need to make Keith his favorite dessert, a rhubarb pie, to prove that I would make him a good wife.  I thought she was kidding but there were all the ingredients waiting for me.   I still chuckle about that now, after all of these years.  
She will be missed by all those who were fortunate enough to have known her.  I am so thankful that she was my mother-in-law.  RIP Kay.  <3

Kay, I loved singing along with you and especially to "Music, Music, Music" . I enjoyed the warmth of your lovely smile. I will miss you.
