Raymond was born in Shell Lake Saskatchewan to Louis and Nellie Nelson. He was the fifth of nine children - Lawrence, Lloyd, Roy, Les, Ray, Vernon, Clarence, Laura and Norma.
Ray worked for Evans Products making wood separations for batteries, but the company closed down as a sign of the times, with everything changing to plastic. His next job was for Fraser Farms Dairy as a milk grader. Ray had various jobs with the Township of Richmond until he became a Public Works Superintendent for Water Works. He retired in 1985 after 30 years of service.
Ray met his true love in 1948, and married Anne on October 29, 1949. They were blessed with two boys – Arnold Raymond Nelson and Chris Louis Nelson.
