Richard William Craig passed away peacefully at Suncrest Retirement Community in Surrey BC on Good Friday, April 3, 2026, in his 91st year. Born in rural Saskatchewan on August 21, 1934, he lived on a farm near Unity SK and was the third of five children, two older sisters and two younger brothers.
After high school, Richard studied at the University of Saskatchewan for a year and, eventually, joined SaskPower which distributed natural gas in the province. As a gas fitter, he was often on call and would leave home on a cold wintry night to re-light someone’s furnace. On those occasions, he would often return home with a jar of dill pickles or homemade jam.
He met the love of his life Elizabeth Elsie Wilson in Unity SK. Richard and Elsie built a remarkable life centered on faith, love, and hard work while raising a family of two, Nelson and Jane or as Richard liked to say, “his favourite son” and “his favourite daughter.”
Richard played hockey for many years and coached young boys. He volunteered with the Elks organization, participating in good works for the community. He also served on the town council in Indian Head SK before taking a management position with Sask Power in North Battleford.
Richard is predeceased by his beloved Elsie, his siblings, his son-in-law Ken, and his grandson Jeremy. Richard is fondly remembered by his grandchildren Liam, Nancy (Devon), Gareth and Ksenia (Jan) and his six great-grandchildren.
Richard’s passions included hockey, baseball, and harness racing. He devoted his retirement to harness racing – training horses, driving in races, and serving on the national harness racing board.
There will be no public service.
