It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Sandy Irwin. Sandy died peacefully in the early evening of September 6, 2019 after suffering through a ten year battle with Cancer. She is predeceased by her son Marco ( Consadori ), survived by her loving husband Chuck, siblings Micki ( Donahue) , Jean ( Hunter ), son Eric ( Consadori ) and his wife Jennifer, stepdaughters Kathleen ( Irwin ), Anne ( Minchin ), Jennifer ( Rice ), stepson Jim ( Irwin ) and eight grandchildren.
Following in her sister Jean's footsteps Sandy made a belated decision to become a nurse, attended the nursing program at OHSU, and began her nursing career in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), again at OHSU, in 1985. It is noteworthy that she completed her nursing degree as a single mother while raising two school age boys. Sandy very seldom took the easy way out! She and Chuck were married in 1986 in sister Jean's back yard in Portland, OR and they then moved to Coquitlam, BC. She resumed her nursing career at Children's Hospital in Vancouver. Her superiors recognised that Sandy was an outstanding NICU nurse and had excellent communication skills, and she was selected to teach a course to prospective members of the Paramedic Infant Transport team. She turned out to be an enormously popular teacher.
Sandy found that the daily commute from Coquitlam to Vancouver was very taxing and she accepted a position in the NICU at Royal Columbian Hospital. Here she met Marian Berrecloth and they became good friends for life. However, Chuck once again messed things up by retiring in 2000. They began travelling to Arizona every winter and Sandy decided that she should also retire. She took a position at Banner Desert Hospital where she found enough work to complete her Social Security requirements.
Shortly after she and Chuck met he talked her into taking up golf, which she enjoyed very much. She had many friends at the Fort Langley Golf Club, and she also joined the ladies club at the Trilogy course in Gilbert, AZ. Sandy was very active in the club, and joined her friend Sandy Freeman on the club executive. She also began playing bridge and two of her partners , Nancy Sewell and Pat Carter, became wonderful friends.
Sandy will be remembered by all as someone who was willing to listen, genuinely willing to sympathize , and always willing to help. She was a wonderful lady who will be sorely missed by all her knew her.
A celebration of life will be held in the spring of 2020 at a date to be announced.
