Born: February 24, 1929, Passed: January 23, 2023
Vivian was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the 7th of 8 children born to William and Katherine Kirkland. Like a lot of Prairie people, the lure of better times (and weather) saw the family move to BC. Settling first at Whalleys Corner, they moved across the Fraser and made New Westminster their permanent home. Mom enjoyed Roller skating as a teen and even competed in the sport. Mom married her first husband and daughters Mary and Mickie soon arrived; however, the marriage did not last. A second marriage to Arthur Hain proved a strong and permanent match in 1951; Mary and Mickie were adopted by him, and son Philip and daughter Cindy completed the new family. Art built the family a home in Coquitlam, and a decade later built another home in White Rock. Grandson Darren was “adopted” into the family and became another brother. Lots of family time was spent fishing and camping with both mom’s and Dad’s respective families as Family was very important. Mom was competitive in Bowling. She enjoyed cooking classes in White Rock. Mom was a very involved Mom, be it in our Baseball, Softball, Dog Club and Horse Club - always ready to organize, scorekeep, be a secretary or treasurer: her favourite saying was “you have to know how much every cookie costs!”
An important part of her life was the farm. They had a cow, pigs and my horses. She loved living at the farm in Langley, where Art had built her dream home. She even had her own horse. She went to many, many horse shows - braiding manes and tails was her specialty, and not just our horses, but also friends' horses. She broadened her interest as show secretary and was always hands on. When dad came home with a boat one day and sport fishing on his mind, the move to Sechelt was soon to follow. Usually the children leave home, but in our case the parents left the children! Garage Sales became a major pastime and dances at the Senior Club were routine. We were always gifted Ferry Tickets as incentive to visit!
When Dad passed in 2012, Mom continued to enjoy life, and moved back to Langley where she enjoyed a busy life. Garage sales, trips to the Casino, visiting with her sister Bonnie, and family diners were her favourite. Family being her most treasured asset. Later, when she went into care at Jackman, she was the busiest of residents. Always happy to go out shopping, visiting, to the casino and sitting in the garden. Visitors every day was the rule! Covid did cause problems, but the staff at Jackman made visits through a window or out on the patio, through the fence a way to stay in contact - and a great way for the family to stay together. The last 6 months of her life, saw a lack of mobility that was very hard - from there a steady decline. We cannot thank the staff at Jackman enough for the care Mom received to the very end. She passed very peacefully.
She leaves daughter Mary Williams (Brian) daughter Mickie Bazzani, son Phil Hain (Wendy) and daughter Cindy Mensing (Frank) and Darren Hopes (Vikki) plus many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
