Its been a year Dad since you went into Gods arms. I still hear you whistle at my back door. I wanted to share with you Dad that your dream is coming true! Rob's reuniting with me,I'm bringing him home this weekend for good. I know you would weep cause that was your greatest hope for us. I miss you so much still,say Hi to Mom for me too,love you both!

Dad, I miss you so much sometimes. It hurts.I trust the Lord that it was time for you to be by His side,I just selfishly miss having coffee with you and talking. I am so thankful I have so many memories with you,I was reminded at a funeral this week and I found myself telling the family to make as many memories as they can cause its something you will have left to enjoy when that person is gone. I loved sharing my life with you buddy.

Poppa, I'm so blessed to have had a good Grandpa, you were the only grandpa here on earth that I had and I miss you greatly. But something I want to share with everyone, was that day just a week before you went to Oakside you sat me down on my bed and pointed at my guitar. I was in the midst of brushing my teeth but you chuckled and said "Play me a song" so i finished my teeth then I sang. I sang the worship song |Set me free| when I looked up at you you had your arms raised and tears in your eyes. When you sat down beside me you said out of the blue "You know what, I am going to shake that young mans hand." I wasn't too sure who you were talking about but noticed you looking at Jason's photo. Then it hit me. You told me that when its your time to go "Home" You want to shake his hand and tell him how my music sounds" We cried together. Little did I know that just a short time after this conversation you went to be with Jesus. Take care of My Jason, poppa teach him things for me while you're up there. I miss you both so much my heart aches but I remember what you told me when Jay died. I wont forget that. I love you always and Forever. xoxoxo  JOYFUL

WORDS OF WISDOM BY WALLY: LONELINESS’ ENEMY IS A FRIENDLY HELLO!
I was sitting one bright day outside the department store waiting for my wife to finish her shopping. It had been quite a while and I began to feel a bit lonely. I asked God what I should do. I saw a few men sitting on the other bench across from me near the entrance.  In that moment came the still small voice, “Say hello to the man in the middle.” I jumped up as fast as my labored legs could go when the seat beside him became empty.  As I began to speak to the gentleman, I was amazed how the loneliness faded into the wind. We began to speak about the way his knee was failing him. I shared with him about the doctors who fixed my knee. I lifted up my pant leg and showed him my scar and said, “This has been 12 years of no pain. Why don’t you see what they say for yours?” By the end of our conversation, the gentleman had a shimmer of hope that possibly, just possibly, he may see days without pain.  I smiled in that moment…something your mouth does not do when you’re lonely.

WORDS OF WISDOM BY WALLY: ALWAYS LISTEN AND THANK THE LORD FOR GUIDING YOU
You know, when you spend time with the Lord, you get to know his voice quite well. I was going about my day, whatever task it held for me, when a lady and her family came to my mind. I heard the Lords’ still voice instructing me to pack up some food, some fresh groceries and head over to her house. I didn’t know why it was so important in that moment to head over, but when the Lord speaks, you just trust and listen. He never made me a fool, not once. I walked up her walkway and knocked. Out she came with a puzzled look. I told her, “The Lord asked me to come over and ask you how you were doing and see if these fresh groceries could be of use.”  She proudly answered, “Oh no, we are just fine.” At that moment, the Lord told me to say this – “Open your fridge door so I may see.” Now normally I may not have been so bold, however, I guess the Lord knew the right way to reach her.  She began to weep and weep. Moments later she graciously opened it.  She had not a crumb of food in her fridge. If you only knew in that moment what a blessing it was to her, you would weep along with me. It overwhelmed my heart to experience the compassion our Lord has for us, to know exactly how to meet our needs.  We hugged her and let her know that God always looks out for his sheep. You know, the Lord speaks to you in a way that you know to listen and always remember to listen because you never know the impact it will have!

WORDS OF WISDOM BY WALLY:

Each one of these statements regularly came from his heart and mouth. Some he learned from God’s word, some are life lessons. His hope would be for someone to grab ahold and learn the wisdom from the ages before they have to learn the hard way.

1. Always obtain a minimum of 3 references when checking into people.
2. Love is more than just a word; it’s doing something to touch another’s heart.
3. Take every opportunity in life and make wise decisions, seek the Lord and take his step.
4. Never talk back to your dad or mom.

WORDS OF WISDOM BY WALLY: MONEY DOES GROW ON TREES – IF YOU PLANT, WAIT AND HARVEST!
Saving money is something to be learned and is a very wise thing to do! It takes time to make your money grow just like it takes time for a tree to grow. As I always told the grandkids, “If you put money away, leave it alone, forget about it, it will multiply. However, you must wait a very long time” If you continually spend money like the wind, on treats and temporary things, it never has a chance to multiply. I taught my grandchildren by asking them to hand over $10.00 of their allowance money to me and forget about it. Don’t ask me about it and we will see what happens. Boy, you should have seen their face. Forget about it- My allowance? (chuckles) 
Then about 1 year later I would give them back a $20.00 to show them how it grew. Man, Wow! They were so happy I could peel them off the ceiling. Now I think everyone can take a hint from this story (eyebrow raise). We don’t need to spend, spend, and spend on whatever we want “right now.” Multiplying money is a choice to save and let it grow and be content where you are at!

STORY BY WALLY: GARLIC, GARLIC, GARLIC
There is only one way to say I rarely get a cold and that is with one word. “GARLIC!”  I would say “Come on over here!”  My wife would say, “No way, no way, I’m not touching you, I can smell you 150 feet away” I said, “OOOOOOHHHHH YES, MY WAY, COME MY WAY BABY, COME OVER HERE BABY!” It was all laughs and fun. My dad chewed garlic when he got rid of snuff. I suppose I learned to love it! So I must leave with you the word….. GARLIC!

STORY BY WALLY: THE INTERNAL REWARD OF GIVING.

Someone once asked me why I give so much. There are many reasons why but I have a story to show how it impacts my own heart. I went to Sunday service one week just like we always did. I loved to bless people and tried to make a point of helping my church fellowship.  Giving is something the Lord asks us to do and to listen to his directive on how. That’s what make each time different and so interesting. This church service, in particular, was one of my favorites. I sat down before the service started and 2 little boys came bounding down the aisle. They jumped right up on my knee and said, “I love those buns
you bring!” They had such love and appreciation in their eyes; something that makes you want to give and give and give. Children know when something is special and that day they made a point of telling me what it meant to them. This my friend, fired up the giver!

WORDS OF WISDOM BY WALLY: EVERY PERSON IS IMPORTANT AND IS A SOMEONE
I had a good life.  I met so many people, especially special needs. It was hard to leave the Heldman Home for the disabled. They would come running down the road to see me whenever I pulled in. There were a lot of events, not to mention going out and doing the laundry for them. They came along every Monday. When you organized them, out they came with their marked clothes. We had them trained! Then there were “All you can eat” nights… holy man. Smorgie board as we called it! Oh and across the line to Disney land we went … 8 of us. Hilarious! Two girls got constipated, so up and down the stairs they went, over and over again, trying to get un-constipated. Do girls really do this?! 
Then there was little John who snored all the time. So, out came the magazines! Good Grief! The other guys would whack him to stop snoring! I would ask the guys, “Who was daring enough to get on the rides?” They all wanted a chance of course. I looked over at Larry shocked as ever and said. “What you doing there?” “Me can go!!” Leroy yelled, as he wrapped his arms around the toll booth guy when it was his turn!  Leroy ended up riding with a stranger. He didn’t want to go on our seat… he insisted on going with the stranger.  Once they got on the cotton picking machine, you could hear him a mile away screaming, but he made a friend because by the time they finished the ride they were clung to each other so close for dear life. He came off saying, “Me friend, Me friend!” It was so hilarious, I couldn’t forget that moment.   The stranger came off and said, “Man, I didn’t know his strength… he had me around the neck! But don’t worry about it – today Leroy was happy.”
I just want you to know that everyone is a someone with a heart, a thought, a word and a spirit. Each person has value and spending time to get to know someone can be so rewarding to your own soul. Look at people as though they have a story, a smile, a little part that is dying to be loved. I guarantee your life will be full of riches, down here and with Jesus.

HAVE A LITTLE FUN IN LIFE
I went out one weekend with a bunch of the gang from Heldman Home. It was a nice day out so I asked them, “Who wants to go for a swim?” Boy I never saw them move so fast. Within moments they were all ready to go. I said, “Where are your lifesavers?” Off they went to grab them!  Out to the lake we went on a boat. We had them hang onto a bar and pulled them behind the boat, like tubing as you call it now. I asked them as we were driving, “do you want a thriller?” They said, “YES!” So faster we went. I told them, “don’t hold your hands up, and just keep them on the bar.” I guess in that moment they all second guessed the thrill and they ended up power diving or letting go as you call it. I turned around without knowing and thought, “Where did they all go!” Then I could see a line of lifesavers and we all laughed together! Take moments in life to enjoy each other. Don’t work too hard and miss the memories you can make together. These are the ones you carry with you all thru life, right up to the end. They will always bring joy back to your soul and make dark clouds go away.

STORY BY WALLY: A SIMPLE FUN STORY OF TEACHING OTHERS
Down at Heldman home the gang always begged me for an ice cream eating contest. They knew how much I loved ice cream but they thought they could out do me. HAHA! Boy did they have big mouths. Little did they know my chocolate cream pie experience! So one day I decided to surprise them. I set up a section and brought them in for the contest. We brought out 4 pails of ice cream and began dishing it out scoop by scoop. Now I know myself, I can eat a whole pail so I thought, “Let’s see how far they get!”
Paul was in the lead but began to slow down after 4 bowls. At this point I shared one tip Vern and I had. I said, “Sit up straight boys, I’ll give you a chance!” Well, not much longer and they were out of the game! Not even a half pail. So, I finished my pail as I didn’t want to let it go to waste and it showed them that Wally was the king of Ice Cream!

WORDS OF WISDOM BY WALLY: ABUNDANCE MARKET STAND ON MY DRIVEWAY

One summer, we had the orchard full of apples. There were so many we couldn’t even find room to put them all.  I filled the basement with 15 boxes of apples, all lined up. I closed the door to the basement and I thought to myself “Man what I am I gonna do with all this!” I asked the Lord, “Lord, what do you want me to do? He answered “I want you to take 4-5 boxes of apples, take them around to the road and set them out.”  Within 2 days those boxes of apples were gone! God wanted to show me when I am over-flowing and unbalanced with food, that it will always be used by someone.  I even had 2 large rows of turnips and same thing….2 days!  I said, “Thank you Lord. I had the over-flow because I know that it will help someone. He taught me that when I have much to give and even when I have too-little, the outcome is the same – a touched heart.

I really appreciate the giving heart you had with everyone you encountered.  You were like a second dad to me and I always appreciated your sound advice.  You will be deeply missed by many in the days to come.  Love you Dad.

Uncle Wally,you have always been in my thoughts. I beleive because you reminded me of Dad so much,your actions,laugh and personality. Your Family was so lucky to have spent so many great years with you. Know you and Dad can spend time playing cards, fishing, and talking about the old times.Our thoughts and prayers are with you Barb,Diane and Doug

Dad , I sat and visited you on Fathers day. I came to realize that there won't be any more chances to call you up and  drag you over for dinner or what ever  was happening for that day. You'd  love it anyways and would always be 1-2 hrs early . Your teachings taught me to be a good person and to cherish  my family .It was important to you  that your family  did well and you did a great job , as we all are doing very well.Your grand kids  rally'd around you in the good times and the  tough ones also .I do know that you are still with us no matter where we go. I promised you a fishing trip and you have been to a couple of excellent  places  this past couple of months.Thanks for the  good luck. Please give mom a hug for me.

Marie remembered her pie making day with Wally.  Marie is a good pie maker but so is dad and he was the boss overseeing her endeavors to make pies. He straw-bossed the show. lol lol  He taught her how to make apples dumplings with the pastry, instructing her how to pie apples on; put the sugar and spices on top with a little round pastry  on top to seal everything in.  What a time!  He was a real tease.  They made some really good memories.

I really enjoyed his story about disciplining his sister when she threw a tantrum.  He told his mom he'd deal with it and went and threw a bucket of cold  water on her and she never threw a tantrum again. lol lol I will never forget this story as long as I live. He likes to flirt and I love  to flirt and I loved it when he did.  He always wanted a hug and you couldn't leave without one.  I will always miss him and I love him like my own dad.  I only met him for 4 weeks but I will always love him and he will always be in my heart.    love Inderjit

You were like a grandpa that I've lost in the past and I liked your Harmonica playing.  You would get up and play around I liked it when you would get up and dance around on the floor. I was a teenager when I first met Mr. Heldman. He greeted at the door of our little Whiterock church. He served with a smile a handshake or a hug, and yes always a candy. He was an encourager and followed his words with the promise to pray! 
No matter what the situation He always left you feeling like nothing was too big for God. He was a kind Man who radiated with God's love.

First there were 7 in our family,now there is only 2.On behalf of Ruth,Shirley & sister in law Mabel,we love you Wally and wish to tell you what you,brother,meant to us.

I know you waited for me to come out a few weeks ago to say our goodbyes and what special moments-like limburger cheese sandwiches,how you loved your ice-cream and ate 3 in one sitting and said you could have at least 2 more,the readings from the bible,all those hugs and kisses and our last dance at the wedding.
You were our greatest gift in the world,we will always love you and give Mavis,Marcie,Sam,Vernon and Mom & Dad hug and kiss from us and have a great game of solo and a wonderful reunion.
In conclusion,Diane you are an "angel" on earth.You were so wonderful & caring to your father,no wonder he was so much at peace.God bless you

I was so sad to read on Facebook of the great loss you recently suffered. It is very difficult to give up forever the grandfather of your children, your cherished father for so many years and your close confidante and friend.
I can’t help recalling your happy household that we visited so many times in Kitchener. It was also wonderful to reconnect with your dad in Whitehorse when Nate was playing hockey in Vancouver. Meals around the Heldman table will always hold a place in my heart. I am sure that your mind is full of many such shared memories that you will recall again and again and that will sustain you in the many lonely days ahead.
But – we are so fortunate that we are resilient creatures and that God has so created us that we have the capacity of being healed of grief, the capacity of drying our tears, the strength to accept with perfect resignation the will of our Heavenly Father, and the courage to look to the future with hope and peace.
Let me assure you that life will become meaningful for you again as your sorrow subsides in the comforting presence of your family, friends and loved ones.
I trust this message may extend to you my sympathy, understanding and love. I shall be thinking of you as you undergo the pressures of the next few months. I know your recovery will be complete.
My mom always held your mom in such high esteem.  We must keep in touch with cards and now “technology” even though we live so many miles apart.

a) Since there was no TV when we were young, radio was the rage - Gene Autry, Roy  Rogers was our entertainment on Saturday nites.

b)   Remember when, Wally, we had to crochet medallions for mom's tablecloth in our  spare time.

c) Remember when we went to New Hamburg to get groceries with the horse and cutter.   Coming home in the middle of winter, night time, only 1 lantern hanging on the back, a car  hit us and us 4 kids fell out in the snow bank and the horse and cutter took off.

d) Wally always created excitement - when he left a bird or snake loose in the classroom or  putting the teachers outhouse in the middle of the highway at Halloween.

e) Talking about Halloween - remember when the neighbour took our masks off and nailed  them to the garage door - or the other neighbour poured a pail of water on our heads.

f) For excitement Wally would challenge Vernon and I to a dare on who could pick the  biggest and roundest cherry.Of course i was a skinny minny and Vernon was a lot heavier  than I.  I was much faster and could go out to the end of a branch, whereas when Vernon  tried the same thing, the branch broke and down he fell, with Wally laughing. I guess  things haven't changed much to this day.

g) Remember when dad took us to the river to teach us all to swim.  Standing on the bank,  dad said "this is how you learn to swim" and he threw Wally and Vernon in - it was sink or  swim. Of course he tried to catch me but I was much too fast for him.

h) Remembering when - how about Wally being nice to me and offering to take me for a bike  ride (I was only 5 years old) - he put me on the handle bars, full speed down the laneway  which was hilly, found there were no brakes and headed right for the ditch. I flew off the  handle bars & Wally kept right on going - what a ride!

i) I remember when Wally and Marcie wanted those cookies in the china cabinet. They  started fighting and down fell the whole cabinet which caused a huge racket.  No one  owned up to it, so dad gave us all the strap - yes Wally that was you.

j) The teacher always wondered if I had enough to eat as I was so skinny.  I believe she  thought you ate it all before me.

k) One day Vern and I stayed at our neighbours for no reason, but what a surprise when we  came home to find a baby girl and we wondered where she came from.  Marcie would not  let us hold Shirley and I cried a lot because she was the doll I never had.  Shirley you do  agree we spoiled you -ha, ha.

LATER IN LIFE - I still followed you.  I lived with you and everywhere you moved I was there to help.  We took turns babysitting Barb & Diane, as Mavis nursed while you worked at Schneiders.  Shift work was hard.  Ipicked the girls up at the babysitters and watched them till you all came home.  THIS WAS A WAY OF LIFE TO HELP EACH OTHER.  

OLYMPIC DRIVE - the neighbourhood women came to feast on your famous chocolate pie with whipped cream.

FOR HIS LOVE HAS REALLY CHANGED YOU
AND HIS SPIRIT HAS SET YOU FREE

Growing up in Kitchener I never lived in the same province as my uncle Wally but I always felt like I knew him. My Mom would tell stories of growing up with him as an older brother and when we would occasionally see one another they reminisce those stories over and over. It was always fun to hear.
 
Uncle Wally’s warmth, huge bear hugs, pats on the back and contagious laughter always filled my heart with joy to be around him. But what always stood apart for me was the way he glorified God in the way he spoke and his long prayers that seemed like a conversation with a friend. I didn’t know the Lord at the time but looking back now I see how God was using Uncle Wally to speak to my own heart.
 
Praise God, my husband Bob and I accepted Christ into our hearts over 12 years ago and Uncle Wally often comes to my mind when I think of my walk with the Lord. Uncle Wally’s faithfulness and love for his family, other people and our God has left a lifelong impression in our lives and we are thankful for the various visits and occasions over these past  years we were able to spend with him.
 
You never know the impression you make on someone and how God will use you, even from a distance. Uncle Wally’s life has certainly taught me that. 
 
Thank you Uncle Wally for letting Jesus shine His light through you and touching our lives. We praise God for your example and will always remember you.

Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with you all.  Wally was a truly special man and our son Alexander will miss their visits in the garden.  I will miss his love of my baking...  I have so many muffins in the freezer for him still.  The sun has just peaked out and I feel its him smiling down on all of you today reminding all of us he is happy and safe and loves you all.

Grampa, you will always be in my heart. I love you so very much, you taught us all so well. I will pass on all your wisdom and stories, that is my promise. Your candle will never grow dim. I cry a few tears because I already miss you, but I know we will be together again so that makes it easier to go on. I will make you proud in all things and look to you as my hero! I LOVE YOU.
