Born 1922 in Jacksonville, Florida to Floria Jackson Green of Savannah, Georgia and Andrew Green of Mt. Pleasant, South Carolina. Flora married Benjamin White in 1940 and, in 1944, they moved with their two babies to San Francisco, California. She began working for the city’s Naval Shipyard and, after her husband’s death in 1954, she became a single mother raising 4 children. Flora transferred to the General Services Administration as a Contract Analyst and retired from government service in 1988.
Flora was an active member in Black Women Organized for Action (BWOA) where she led the organization’s demand that African, particularly women diplomats and visitors to San Francisco, be introduced to BWOA and the larger African American communities. Between the late 1980’s to mid 1990’s, Flora was a travel agent with the Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO), specializing in excursions to the region. She eventually served as president of the Northern California Chapter and spearheaded fundraising efforts for the Audrey Palmer Hawks Memorial Scholarship Fund, a pre-cursor to the current CTO Scholarship Foundation.
Flora is survived by her four children Jualynne E. Dodson, William A. White, Sheryll A. White, and Firdie E. White, nine grandchildren, six great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren. Flora insisted that her remains be returned to the San Francisco Bay Area, her longtime home.
