Alva Hartman

Of DeWitt Township, MichiganAge 87, died Tuesday, May 27, 2008 in Lansing after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Alva was born May 22, 1921 in Vestaburg, MI and was the son of William and Ella (Conkin) Hartman. He retired from the State of Michigan Department of Public Health in 1986 after 30 years of service. He was a proud veteran of WW II serving in the European Theatre. He was a member and past commander of Edwin J. Leyanna V.F.W. Post 671, DeWitt. Alva was a member of the Cooties Pup Tent #288 of DeWitt. He was one of the original and founding members of the V.F.W. 671 Honor Guard. He was an active member of the Gunnisonville United Methodist Church. Alva was named Citizen of the Year for DeWitt Township in February 1989. He trained Ingham and Clinton County posse members on horseback for many years. He was one of four members of the ?Music Makers? band in which he played guitar for 30 years. Alva loved to golf and started the retiree?s golf league on Thursday?s at Prairie Creek Golf Course. Alva is survived by his wife of 66 years, Florence (Fritz) Hartman; daughters, Patricia Doll, Nancy Kay (Larry) Drolett; son, Barry; grandchildren, Ron (Michele), Julie (Eric), Tricia (Mike), Dale, Katie, and Billy; 8 great-grandchildren; and 1 great-great granddaughter; mother, Ella Hartman; brother, Kenneth (Nora); sisters, Arlene Carey and Janet Hatt; many nieces, nephews, and friends. Preceded in death by his father, William Hartman. Visitation will be from 2-4, 6-8 P.M. Friday, May 30, 2008 with Funeral Services 1:00 P.M. Saturday, May 31, 2008 at Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw Lansing 48917 with Visiting Nurse Hospice Chaplain Margaret Zee Jones officiating. Interment at Gunnisonville Cemetery with Military Services provided by Edwin J. Leyanna V.F.W.
