She has been reunited with her beloved husband, Victor D. Asbury Jr., who passed away in 2019. Additionally, she is preceded in death by her parents, Victoria and Phillip King, Gladys Laws and Morris Fox; her siblings, Angela K. Fox, Phillip “Tubby” Fox, Gregory Fox, Morris James “Jimmy” Fox Jr., and Marlene “Nono” Morse.
She is survived by her daughters, Peyte (King) Panwas (Zachary), Christine King (Peter Shuell), and Myra King (Kyle Ball); her three grandsons, Damian Ball, Garrett Ball, and James Shuell; her brother, Charles “Chuck” King; several nieces and nephews; and many beloved friends.
Annette was a complex person with a complicated history, marked by setbacks, loss, and illness. Losing her mother, Victoria King, in 1995, was a wound that she never fully recovered from. She mourned the loss of her siblings, as well as her husband Victor. Annette had survived breast cancer but dealt with considerable pain living with autoimmune diseases and bone cancer. She also struggled with lifelong addiction, and it led to many incarcerations, lost opportunities, and relationship difficulties.
Annette had experienced a great deal of joy in her life too. Especially in her marriage to Victor, with whom she shared a love of cats, gardening, the arts, and travel. They also had a rich and rewarding social life through their church, prisoner ministry work, and in helping others through AA.
Annette was also very proud of her daughters and always encouraged them in their professional and creative pursuits. She felt it was important that they appreciate and honor their Odawa heritage—something her mother Victoria had instilled in her.
Annette was known for her intelligence, wit, and humor. She was charming and a brilliant conversationalist who always showed genuine curiosity in others. She also loved antiquing, movies, reading, and writing.
While her life was often complicated by choices and circumstances that put strain on her most important relationships, in the end, she still managed to love and be loved in return.
She will be deeply missed.
The family would like to thank Mark Delamarter for being a patient and attentive companion to Annette towards the end of her life, Mary Held for being a steadfast friend and confidant for many years, and anyone else who supported or looked after Annette at any time in her life.
A visitation for Annette will be held on Saturday, October 11, 2025 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes Lansing Chapel, 900 E Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI 48912.
