Avis Bernice Shroyer

Age 91, passed from this world to be with Lewie, Her husband of 55 years, on January 6, 2016. She was born in frigid Lehr, North Dakota on February 28, 1924. Avis loved horseback riding and was very athletic. She was a member of the championship Lehr cross country track and field team. Upon graduation, she taught kindergarten thru 12 grades for 1 year in a one room school house, where the social studies text consisted of Life magazines. After stoking the morning firebox and breaking the ice from the water bucket, she decided to move on from teaching. She moved to Lansing, Michigan to find work, first at Motor Wheel, where she supported the war efforts. After the war, she attended cosmetology school, and then opened the Bellon Sisters' Beauty Shop with her sister, LaVerne. She met the love of her life at Shroyer's Mobil gas station. They were married 3 months later before the start of deer season, as she insisted that they be married before she would go hunting with him. She spent many summers with her children, grandchildren, and friends children she called her own. She amazed them all when she slalom skied at age 70. She was an officer in the Lansing Chapter of the Eastern Star, president of the Bretton Woods Garden Club, and an active member of Mount Hope Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir. She loved traveling with her airstream. She also had memorable trips to Alaska, Wyoming, Europe, and at age 84, to Norway.

Surviving are her 3 children, Robert L. (Anne) Shroyer, Karen K. (Mark) Sines, and Daniel A. (Kristine) Shroyer; 9 grandchildren, Tanya (Jerry) Ward, Slater Shroyer, Justin Shroyer, Blake (Lauren) Shroyer, Danielle (Jacob Del Dotto) Sines, Adrienne (Dwight Dettloff) Sines, Macy Shroyer, and Daniel A. "D.J." Shroyer; 4 great-grandchildren, Jonathan and Allie Ward, Alexander and Harrison Shroyer. Avis was preceded in death by her husband, Lewis J. in 2003, granddaughter, Jessica, and her parents, August & Alma Bellon; sister, LaVerne Stump and 4 brothers, Archie, Roland, Alden, and Ivan Bellon.

Visitation is from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M. Sunday in the Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing. Funeral Services will be 2:00 P.M. Monday, Jan. 11, 2016 at Mount Hope Presbyterian Church, 301 W. Jolly, Lansing with Pastor Tony Patrick officiating. Viewing will be from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M. Monday at church. Interment will be at Deepdale Memorial Park. Contributions may be made to the American Heart Association or the Hospice House of Mid-Michigan in memory of Avis.
