Betty Lou (Chisler) Payne

September 11, 1927September 6, 2016

Betty Lou (Chisler) Payne, 88, of Laingsburg passed away September 6, 2016 in Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, shortly after being diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. Betty was born in Mishewaka, Indiana on September 11, 1927 and moved with her parents to Lansing as a toddler. She attended Lansing Public Schools, belonging to the first graduating class of Lansing Sexton High School in 1945. She was active with her alumni group for many years and had looked forward to attending her 71st high school reunion this week.

Betty was a very active and competitive person. She played for the Bud Kouts women’s fast-pitch softball team into her 30’s, played volleyball until she was 50, and she bowled into her 80’s. She loved playing games and cards with family and friends and was a Life Master Duplicate Bridge player. Betty was a secretary at Michigan State University in the Department of Human Ecology and retired in 1993. She was an active volunteer for the American Legion in Laingsburg, where she enjoyed playing euchre on Tuesday evenings. Special times were had in the summers at the family cottages, and she was a “frequent flyer” to many of Michigan’s casinos.

Betty is survived by her loving husband of 69 years, Don Payne, and their four children: Gayle Kirker, Glenda Whiting, Bryce (Gloria) Payne, and Betsy (Louis) Stadt. She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Marcy (Ken) McFadden, Renee (Allen) Spiewak, Kelly Kirker and husband Ben Luchsinger, Jeremy Whiting, Jessica Payne, Louis (Jen) Stadt, and Charlie Stadt (fiancée, Megan Frantz). She and Don also enjoyed spending time with their eight great-grandchildren: Jordan and Tyler White; Makenzie, Trevor and Kayla McFadden; Cole Spiewak; Avery Stadt; and Dylan Luchsinger.

Betty was a feisty lady who will be dearly missed by her family and many friends. Services will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes, 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, September, 10th at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour prior to the service. In lieu of flowers the family suggests a donation to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, 1210 W. Saginaw, Lansing, Michigan 48915. Condolences and memories may be shared with the family at

I just got word today-so sorry to hear of Betty's passing. I remember Betty and Norma at the old house in Lansing with Charley and Edna when I was a child-we met later at my dads (Roger) funeral in Kenosha-she was always full of life and fun to be around-glad to see she had such a big family-I'm sure she will be sorely missed.
My sincere condolences to the family.

Don and Family:

So sorry for your loss. My deepest sympathy.

Have lost touch with the folks in Lansing. Jim Fenner let me and Sondra know. He heard from Gayle. I only hear from Glenda at Christmas.
