Betty Jane Smith

Our beloved mother, Betty Jane Smith (West), transitioned from this life on February 13, 2025. She was 81. She was the daughter of Robert Hinton and Mattie West and will be sincerely missed by all who loved her. At her request, a family and friends graveside memorial ceremony will be held.

She is survived by her five children, who made up the entirety of her world, Virginia Longmire, Tammy Amos-Kimes, LaVella Todd and husband Donald, Aronda Cannon and husband Carl, and LaChelle Porter and husband Earl.

Mom retired from the State of MI Department of Corrections as Assistant Deputy Warden. She was an avid reader of all books from classics to mysteries. Most of all the Holy Bible. She enjoyed travelling and music, crossword puzzles and word searches. Mom taught her girls to be independent, dignified with etiquette and to love one another through the ebbs and flows of life.

Besides her children, Mom is survived by her brother, Lawrence “Shariff” Hinton, sister-in-law, Maebelle Burr, and cousin, Melvin “Butch” Morrow; Loving friends, Earlene Yarbough and Janet Cox. She also leaves to cherish her memory 19 grandchildren and a host of great and great great grandchildren; nieces, Tonia Cotton, Patricia Flourry and April Aubrey, and a host of other nieces and nephews.

A Graveside Memorial Ceremony with family and friends will be held at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens on February 21, 2025 at 10am.
