

Carrie Dean Millsap was born November 30, 1948 in Delhi, Louisiana. She was one of 13 children born to the union of Jack and Willie Mae McDowell. She was baptized at an early age as a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend James.
Carrie graduated from Southern University in Baton Rouge, LA earning a Bachelors Degree in Education with a minor in English. While attending Southern, she fell in love with Ben F. Millsap, Jr. They were married for 33 years and had two daughters.
Ever venturous, she left Louisiana to move to Albion, MI for her first teaching assignment in 1970. The next year she moved her family to Lansing, MI and started a teaching career with the Lansing School District which spanned 34 years until her retirement in 2005.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Ben Millsap, Jr.; parents, Jack and Willie Mae McDowell; brothers John McDowell, Willie McDowell and Bobby McDowell; and a sister, Caldora McDowell.
Our beloved Carrie passed away after a valiant fight with breast cancer on Thursday, June 29th, 2017. She leaves to cherish her memory: two daughters, Shanda and Nicole, both of Lansing, MI; her grandson with whom she shared a special bond, Kyle Millsap McGeachy; siblings Earl McDowell of Delhi, LA; Theodis McDowell of Alexandria, LA; O’Gilbert (Mae Willie) McDowell of Los Angeles, CA; Melvin (Julia) McDowell of Delhi, LA; Josephine (Bruce) Carroll of DeRidder, LA; Sadie McDowell of Baker, LA; Albert (JaeKwong) McDowell of Laurel, MD; Boyd (Peggy) McDowell of Dallas, TX; godson, Lucien Todman of Atlanta, GA as well as a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Visitation will be from 2:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. July 5, 2017 at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Homes 900 E. Michigan Ave., Lansing, MI. Funeral Service will be 11:00 a.m. Monday, July 10, 2017 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Delhi, Louisiana. Arrangements by McFarland Funeral Home
