Cathrin Marie Ward, age 70, of Lansing, MI was born June 17, 1956, to Donald F. Austin and Barbara J. Harris, and passed away Wednesday, July 22, 2026. She was a loving sister, mother, aunt, cousin, and friend.
Cathrin came from a large family where she was one of nine children and, for many years, the only girl among her brothers. Family was always at the center of her life, and she treasured every opportunity to spend time with those she loved.
She found joy in life's simple pleasures such as playing bingo, trying her luck at the casino, or enjoying the outdoors on a camping trip. She was an avid bowler and billiards player who loved a little friendly competition. Family game nights were some of her favorite times, especially when it came to Yahtzee. More often than not, she would come out the winner.
Cathrin dedicated many years of her working life to caring for others at the Odd Fellow and Rebekah Home. She also worked alongside her brother, Richard, at the Country Club of Jackson before retiring due to health concerns.
Throughout her life, Cathrin faced many health challenges. Even so, she did her best not to let them define her or bring her down. She met each obstacle with resilience, continuing to enjoy the people and activities she loved whenever she could. Although she could have a temper at times, she had a heart of gold and will be truly missed by all.
Cathrin is survived by her daughters: Sarah (Chad) Austin of Jackson, MI and Mary (Eldon) Down of Lansing, MI; grandchildren: Deacon, Chloe, Cameron, Irysh and Elliot; sister Angela (Thomas) Kolk of Jackson, MI; brothers: Danny Austin, Tim Austin and Jack Austin.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Barbara J. Harris; father, Donald F. Austin; brothers: Michael Austin, Richard Lee Austin and Fred Austin; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A memorial service for Cathrin will be held Saturday, August 8, at True North Church, 3200 W. Willow St. Lansing, MI 48917 with an Austin style after party immediately following, 500 Glendale St. Jackson, MI 49203. Please bring a passing dish, your own drink and a chair.
