

Charlie died in his sleep shortly after returning from has annual trip to Stratford, Ontario, at the age of 81. He was born in Sebewaing, MI and graduated from Sebewaing High School. After serving in the Navy, on the USS Cony (DD/DDE-508), he attended the University of Michigan and earned a degree in Economics. He was a proud and loyal Michigan fan. He later finished his Juris Doctorate at the Detroit College of Law, and retired from the State of Michigan Attorney General’s office.
By far, Charlie’s greatest passion was music. He played his trumpet with various bands in Sebewaing and Lansing, and took every opportunity to be part of a jam session. His trumpet went with him everywhere and will be buried with him in the Liken family plot in Sebewaing, MI.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond “Sam” and Gertrude Liken, his sister Mary Schippel, his daughter, Kimberlee, and wife, Arlene.
Besides many the many wonderful friends, Delta Kappa Epsilon brothers, CONY shipmates, fellow Veterans at the VFW, American Legion, and FOE, Charlie leaves behind his daughters, Michelle of Columbia, SC and Pam (Tom) Taylor of Dansville, MI, grandsons Tom (Kris) of Dansville, MI and family, and John of Chicago; his brother-in-law, John Schippel of Barrington, and nephews Scott (Lisa), Doug (Nancy), and their families.
Besides music, Charlie’s passion was animals. He was as great supporter of the Capital Area Human Society (www.cahs-pets.org) and his family would be honored if you would care to make a donation in his name. In addition, the DKE Fraternity Common Sense Foundation has set up a Memorial Fund in memory of Charlie (www.commonsensefoundation.net). You may also make contributions in the name of his daughter, Kimberlee Liken, to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).

A memorial service will take place at Silverlawn Cemetery in Sebewaing, MI on Saturday, August 6 at 11am EST, followed by a gathering of friends for lunch at the VFW in Sebewaing.
