Curtis “Darkness” “Off da Chain” Gwin III was a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, loyal friend, and a man whose kindness and larger-than-life personality left a lasting impact on everyone fortunate enough to know him.

He was preceded in death by his beloved grandmother, Honey; his father, Curtis Gwin II; his mother-in-law, Becki; his sister-in-law, Suanne; and many cherished aunts and uncles who welcomed him home.

Curtis never met a stranger. He had a gift for making people feel like family, whether he had known them for years or had just met them. He was always willing to lend a helping hand, offer words of encouragement, or simply be there when someone needed him most. His generosity, compassion, and infectious smile touched countless lives.

Music was one of Curtis’s greatest passions. Known by many as “Darkness” or “Off da Chain,” he loved performing alongside Cap1 from Simken Heights, sharing his talent, energy, and love for music with everyone around him. He also found joy in coaching basketball for the Eagles, where he inspired and mentored young athletes, leaving a positive influence that extended far beyond the basketball court.

Family was the center of Curtis’s world. Some of his happiest moments were spent surrounded by loved ones at family cookouts, standing proudly at the grill, laughing, telling stories, and making sure everyone had a full plate. If music came on, you could count on Curtis to be the first one showing off his dance moves and encouraging everyone else to join in. His laughter was contagious, his presence was comforting, and he had a way of turning ordinary moments into unforgettable memories.

Though our hearts are broken by his passing, we find comfort in the incredible legacy of love, laughter, strength, and generosity that he leaves behind. Curtis’s memory will live on in every family gathering, every song that reminds us of him, and every life he touched along the way.

Curtis is survived by his beloved wife, Janet; his daughters, Cheyenne and Phoenix; his cherished godsons, Jamar Lackey II and Damian Redman Jr; and his adored grandchildren, Kai and Kaliyah.

He is lovingly remembered by his mother, Stephine Jackson Gwin; his sisters, Awsha and Sonja; his brother, Samory; and his brother and lifelong best friend, Terry.

He is also lovingly remembered by his sisters-in-law, Amy (Mark), Tricia (Brandon), Tina, and Lizzy (Dean); his nephews, Samory Gwin Jr., Gyasi Gwin, Omawale Gwin, Jamar Lackey II, Chozen Gwin, and Peyton Archer; his nieces, Abena Gwin, Ama Gwin, and JaLya Lackey; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends who will forever carry his memory in their hearts.

Curtis’s love, laughter, and spirit will never be forgotten. He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and always remembered.

A funeral service will be held at Gorsline Runciman Tiffany Chapel, 3232 West Saginaw Street, Lansing, MI 48917, on Monday, August 24 at 2 PM, with a visitation beginning at 1 PM.
