With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of our beloved father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend David “Pop’s” Lopez, at the age of 75.
Born on March 27, 1951, in Lansing, Michigan, David was the son of Maximo Lopez Sr. and Lucia Dimas Lopez. He is preceded in death by his parents; brothers Pedro Vicente Lopez Sr. and John Lopez; and sister Juanita “Jane” Lopez.
David spent nearly three decades working at General Motors Fisher Body as an A Trim Assembler and Quality Control Technician. He took pride in his work ethic, his union roots, and the friendships he built throughout the years. Raised in Lansing, David was never one to follow the crowd. He moved through life with curiosity, humor, stubborn independence, and a perspective entirely his own. He loved conversation, old stories, and people who were unapologetically themselves.
David admired the wit and eccentricity of Woody Allen films and often spoke of Diane Keaton as though she represented an entire philosophy of life — intelligent, artistic, awkward, and beautifully authentic. He was a lifelong lover of music and could spend hours debating lyrics, albums, and whether early Bob Dylan was better than late Bob Dylan. He was also an admirer of Hunter S. Thompson and carried a little Gonzo spirit everywhere he went — skeptical of authority, endlessly observant, and always searching for honesty beneath the chaos of the world.
David was also an avid writer, in every sense of the word. He filled notebooks, napkins, scraps of paper, and margins with poems, thoughts, unfinished stories, and strange little truths. Some were brilliant, some confusing…but most were both. The world feels quieter now without his records spinning late into the night, his long tangents, his poetry tucked into drawers, and his stubborn refusal to become ordinary.
David was survived by brothers Adam Lopez, Rudy Lopez, and Maximo Lopez Jr. and sister Dianne Linda Lopez, children David Lopez Jr (wife/daughter in law: Merci Lopez), Asia Lopez-Chard, and Nancy Lopez-Pickering, his grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Memorial Service will be held on May 16, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Gorsline Runciman Tiffany Chapel, 3232 W. Saginaw St. Lansing, MI 48917. Dinner will follow at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
