David was an ambitious entrepreneur who started a sporting goods business with his brother Mark Shappell in their parents' basement in 1978. From there, their dream and business flourished. After relocating a few times around the Lansing and Grand Ledge area, Mark and David were able to witness their business grow into a very successful corporation, soon known around the industry as Shappell Corporation. Their most popular product was the Jet Sleds. After 37 years of success, David and Mark were able to sell their business in 2015 and soon retire in 2016.
Besides creating a business from the ground up, David was an army veteran who served his country in Vietnam from 1969 to 1970.
While David was attending physical therapy, he would always bring stuffed animals to the children at the office to put a smile on their faces.
Lastly, David was married to the love of his life, Betty Shappell for over 40 years. They enjoyed hunting, fishing, and going on many adventures around the world. Both David and Betty went on over fifteen cruises together. The great outdoors was where their love truly blossomed.
David was preceded in passing by his wife Betty Shappell; and his parents Ralph and Mary Shappell.
David is survived by his brother, Mark Shappell; his step-children, Cindy Moon, Karlene Kerkes, and Frank Kerkes; and many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home on September 12, 2026. Visitation will occur at 11:00 AM with a service following at 12:00 PM.
All are welcome to join the family for a luncheon at the funeral home following the services from 1:00 PM.
