Lansing
A life enjoyed. Born in Boston, Elliot grew up in Farmington and was a graduate of Farmington High School. He enlisted in the Marines in 1946. He graduated with a degree in education from Michigan State College in 1952 and earned a Masters in Administration in 1959. He met his sweetheart of 63 years, Dawn (Erickson) Tyler at the Williams Dorm cafeteria. He was a creative education leader as a principal for 30 years in the Lansing School District at Horsebrook, Everett, Mt. Hope, and Averill Elementary Schools. He always loved gardening, and sports, excelling at football, basketball, baseball, bowling. He was an avid golfer and for many years he organized the Elks Golf League, and was a member of the Elks Bowling League and was involved with many events through South Lansing Civitan. Camping was the Tyler family's summer pastime and Elliot assembled terrific cross county trips to all parts of the U.S. He put together memorable family movies about the trips set to music. Serving in the Caribbean whetted his interest in warm, tropical places and he and Dawn travelled to Florida over twenty winters, primarily to Indian Harbor Beach and as recently as 2012.
He is missed by his wife, Dawn Tyler of Lansing; daughters, Debra (Kurt) Guenther of Seattle and Jodi (Frank) Baron of Haslett; and grandchildren Kate and Jack Guenther and Sierra Baron. He was the oldest of four brothers- the late Ernest (late-Martha) Tyler, the late Lee Tyler (Jean) and the late Richard Tyler (Carol Wilson); and he enjoyed the support of many nieces and nephews.
