George Robert "Bob" Spagnuolo, 96, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2025, in Lansing, Michigan. Born on September 2, 1928, in Lansing, Bob lived a full and vibrant life dedicated to his faith, family, and community.
Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. After his service, he worked briefly at Motor Wheel before embarking on a 30-year career as a warehouse manager at Lansing Candy and Cigar Company. It was there that his well-known love of candy truly flourished.
Bob raised his four children in Dewitt, Michigan, in a warm and faith-filled home. His neighborhood was a place of lasting friendships, and he created an environment where kindness and love were ever-present. His children never heard him raise his voice or speak unkindly about anyone. He was a devoted father who never missed a sporting event, award dinner, or special occasion in their lives. Whether cheering from the bleachers or teaching them how to play ping pong, Bob was always present with unwavering support and encouragement. As his family grew, he continued this tradition with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, attending their local events with the same enthusiasm.
An avid sports fan and athlete himself, Bob loved playing golf—especially with his brothers Paul and Tony at Groesbeck Golf Course. He was also an enthusiastic bowler and a dedicated fan of football and basketball, particularly MSU teams, the Detroit Tigers, and the Detroit Lions. If there was a ball involved, Bob was watching. Gardening was another of his passions; after long days at work, he would often head straight to his large garden to water and tend to it before coming inside to announce that it was "almost time to can." He also found joy in dancing, playing cards with friends and family, and visiting casinos. His travels frequently took him to Colorado to visit his daughter’s family, where he attended senior PGA and LPGA golf tournaments at the Broadmoor Golf Course.
Bob’s faith was central to his life. He was actively involved in prayer groups and served as an usher for St. Jude and St. Therese Catholic Churches for many years. His deep devotion guided him throughout his life and shaped the values he instilled in his family.
Above all else, Bob loved his family. He cherished every moment spent with them and found immense joy in their company. He LOVED his chocolate—thanks to Kenny for always keeping him stocked up! His life can be summed up in three simple yet profound words: faith, family, and candy bars.
Bob is survived by his four children: Mike (Kim) Spagnuolo, Joan Spagnuolo, Nancy (Al) Wile, and Kathy (Ernie) Schmidtchen; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his loving parents George and Tresolina Spagnuolo, seven siblings, and other beloved family members and friends.
A Funeral Mass will be held on March 6, 2025, at 10:30 AM at St. Gerard Catholic Church, located at 4437 W. Willow Hwy., Lansing, MI 48917. Visitation will begin at 9:30 AM prior to the service. A luncheon will follow at Piazzanos located at 1825 Grand River Ave., Lansing, MI 48906.
Bob’s kindness, unwavering faith, and deep love for his family will be remembered always. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
