Glen passed away peacefully at his home in his sleep and into the arms of his Savior on July 8 after a battle with ALS. We are sure the Lord welcomed him home with a heavenly trumpet that he was unable to play during his illness. Glen was born in Detroit, MI on September 4, 1954. He graduated from Ferndale High School. He received his Bachelors’ degree (BME) from Wheaton College and his Master’s degree (Performance-Trumpet) from the University of Michigan/Ann Arbor.
Glen worked as a Band Teacher throughout his career at Atherton Schools in Flint, MI, Lansing Christian School and retired after 24 dedicated years from the Lansing School District.
Glen was a lifelong University of Michigan fan. As a season football ticket holder, he could be found at the Big House in Ann Arbor on football Saturdays; and enjoyed the friendly rivalry with his Spartan friends; not only during the football season, but all year long.
Glen loved playing his trumpet. He was an active member and soloist with the Lansing Concert Band for many years. As the Assistant Director for their summer season, he directed the band during their annual Fourth of July celebration at the Riverfront. He was also a dedicated member of his church orchestra (South Church). Glen played his trumpet at many area weddings and willingly played taps for veterans’ funerals.
Glen is survived by his wife of 41 years, Dawn (Miller) Akers, son Ryan (Rebecca) Akers, daughter Ashley Akers and perfect grand-daughter, Sadie Lee Akers. He is also survived by his sister Carole Alspaugh of Plainfield, Indiana; brother Harold (Elizabeth) Akers of Ferndale, MI and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Visitation will be Tuesday, July 13 at Gorsline-Runciman at 900 Michigan Avenue, Lansing, 48912, from 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm. The funeral service will be held at South Church, 5250 Cornerstone Drive, Lansing, 48917 on Wednesday, July 14 at 11 am with visiting one hour prior to the service at the Church. Interment will be held at Flint Memorial Park, Mount Morris, MI. Those desiring to make a memorial contribution in Glen's honor may do so to South Church.
