Gregory John Walker, Lansing, died February 14, 2017 after a brave fight with cancer. With the love and support of his parents, Jack (Ann) Walker and Sally (John) Olszewski, Greg's optimism and spirit kept him with us longer than the odds said he would.
Greg is survived by his 4 children, Nicholas, Jeannie, Lauren and Michael, along with their mother Janet Walker, who stayed by his side throughout his illness. Also surviving are his sister, Suzette (Joe) Parks, and step-siblings Sheryl (Matt) Pellerito, Lauryl Scott, Mark (LaTara) Scott and Stephen Olzewski. Greg also shared his life with Aunts, Uncles, and many cousins, several nieces and nephews, as well many in-laws. He loved having his family around him.
Born on St Patrick's Day, 1962, Greg's love for celebrating life touched many people throughout his journey on this Earth. Greg graduated from J. W. Sexton High School in 1980, and worked at Meijer for several years as one of their most loyal employees. He rode his bicycle to work, rain or shine, before he could drive, and never missed a day. Greg also worked for eight years at Castle Photo, where he developed his own photography skills, just in time to start his family and fill many photo albums with the loves of his life. He then hired in at GM Fisher Body, and later the Lansing Delta Township Plant, where he spent the last two decades proudly creating Lansing built automobiles and dozens of lasting friendships.
Greg's biggest love, after his children, was disc golf. He was a founding member of Capitol City Renegades and one of the original designers of Grand Woods Disc Golf Course in Lansing. Greg played for the love of the sport as well as professionally while inspiring countless others to pick up a disc and have some fun. He will long be remembered by those who continue to play disc golf as "Walker" and his lasting memory will be displayed at Grand Woods Park in the form of a memorial bench in his honor. Greg was a proud 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Lansing council 788.
It was often said that there wasn't a stranger that Greg didn't know. He thrived on the exchange of conversations with friends and his smile would light up their day. Greg will be deeply missed, but not forgotten. His legacy lives on.
Visitation will be on Friday February 17, 2017, 12pm-2pm and 6pm-8pm, with a 7:00 pm Knights of Columbus 4th degree Chalice Service at the funeral home. Services are Saturday, February 18, 2017 at 11am in the Tiffany Funeral Home, 3232 W. Saginaw, Lansing with Fr. John P. Klein presiding. Rite of Committal to follow at Delta Hillside Cemetery. The family will receive guests for a Celebratory Lunch at the Knights of Columbus, 5300 N Grand River in Lansing at 1pm.
The family would like to give a special thanks to Hospice House of Mid-Michigan, especially Tracey, his last new friend, who cared for him and provided comfort during the end of his journey here. In lieu of flowers, Donations can be made to National Pancreatic Cancer Foundation and Hospice House of Mid-Michigan.
